according to amazon.co.uk SACD has been scrapped. . Its beyond me why would they do that as it costs them nothing to keep it there. Its all in software and cell does all the processing.

Are you sure about that? I think some chipsets were required for SACD.

SONY is one of the major patent holder of SACD. But, even sony has to pay some patent fee to other patent holders (mainly to Philips). Because actually most of PS3 users are not interseted in SACD capability (it's sadly for me), it is an effective way to cut SACD capability to produce low price model.

On the other hand, 40GB model can play "DSD disk" which is DVD-R/RW disk in which DSD signal recorded by VAIO PC, 40GB PS3 has a capability of SACD on the hardware level. Perhaps it has lockd out on the software level.

So it may be possible to give SACD capability by costly firmware update to a 40GB model, I think.

Not too sure mate. All i know that there is no specialised IC for DSD encoding on PS3 motherboard. Its all done in Cell. Obviously, there must have been something else they removed to save few cents. I hope, someone will be able to shed more light on this over the next couple of days.

Cheers

Yes, most users of PS3 probably do not care about SACD's, actually most users in general do not care but this has been one of my peeves as well. I really wished the standalone player supported SACD, or at least Sony's own players would support SACD.

I have a dream one day to get down to one source player but I do not think I will ever have it.

Perhaps this is part of the strategy to differentiate the two SKUs.

As I understood, Sony will only be offering trimmed down model in PAL regions after existing stocks of 60 GB are gone???

I'm pretty sure they will introduce the 80GB PS3 once the 60GB are gone.

Thanks all. Think I'll be getting the 60GB version in the wait for a standalone BD-player that plays SACD.

I doubt that. Companies like Sony and Philips have got cross-licensing agreements with each other.

SACD also has its own copy protection scheme called PSP. From Wikipedia.
Quote:
SACD includes various copy protection measures of which the most prominent is Pit Signal Processing (PSP), a physical watermarking feature that contains a digital watermark modulated in the width of pits on the disc (data is stored in the pit length). The optical pickup must contain special circuitry to read the PSP watermark, which is then compared to information on the disc to make sure it's legitimate. Because the majority of DVD players and all DVD-ROM drives use an optical pickup that lacks this specialized watermark detection circuitry they cannot read the data on the SACD layer of a protected SACD disc.

On hybrid SACD discs, PSP is only applied to the SACD layer — not to the CD layer.

It's official: the future of SACD looks a little less bright today than it did just a few days ago. Perhaps a lot less bright. Sony has announced a cost-down PS3 model for the European market, dropping SACD support.

Don't know your muscial taste, but some older stuff that has been re-mastered into surround and available on SACD includes:

Moody Blues
Genesis
Pink Floyd: DSOTM
Tubular Bells

Additionally, probably my favorite MCh SACDs are the first two albums by Nickel Creek. They are "bluegrass", but being young (compared to me anyway) they are pretty heavily influenced by a lot of stuff, so even non-bluegrass fans tend to like them.

Also, ABKO's remasters of the Rolling Stones' older albums were all SACD hybrids, although not labeled as such, and stereo only (as they should be).

Have there been a release for 'Wish you were here' and/or 'Animals' from Pink Floyd on SACD? I have the DSOTM SACD and it is magical.
