Default "Playstation 3 consumes 380W"

PS3 Futher Details

With the Playstation 3 launch just around the corner, Sony has released further information about the next gen console. The PS3 is a power hug and consumes around 380 watts of power more than double the Xbox 360's 160 watts and eight times the PS2's nimble 45 watts. So spending an average of 4 hours a day on the machine will add approx $ 80 to your yearly power bill. Coming to the files supported included in the list are MPEG-2 (PS and TS), MPEG-1, H.264 / MPEG-4 AVC / SP video formats and MP3, ATRAC (but of course), AAC, WAV audio formats. Also supported are various image formats like JPEG, BMP, TIFF, GIF and PNG. The optical drive in addition to BD-ROM games can read BD video, BD-R/RE, DVD±R/RW (VR-Modes also supported), Music CD's, SACD along with support for AVCHD media.

I notice the DVD symbol on the PS3 only says VIDEO/ROM underneath it.
Does this mean it won't support DVD Audio?
Does this mean my Pioneer Elite D45a will still be useful for something to me?

Yes, that would be correct. Otherwise, the PS3 would be perfect.

A beast like this only blows 380? That's not bad at all.

If you build yourself a gameworthy PC in around the same ballpark of specs, you're screwed if you don't put in a PSU of at least 450 these days.

In fact, most PC gamers just go for 500-600 and finish it.

I'm actually pretty impressed with this number myself, all things considered.

380 W only applies to 110-120V versions right? (like for Japan and N. America)

Does this mean that 220V versions (for Asia Pacific and Europe) would have higher power consumption?

I noticed this since the PS3 WILL NOT use Auto-volt (100V-240V 50/60 hz) like what the PSP power adaptor had.

Does this mean that power consumption may be different for select regions?

It shouldn't. The higher the voltage, doesn't mean it'll consume more power.
The higher the voltage, the lower the electric current has to be to maitain the same power.

What they should state is that it can play DualDisc (non DVD-Audio portion)

Because logically if it can play DualDisc DVD side then it should be able to read the advanced resolution audio of dualdiscs like the NIN releases.

Well it can play the Dolby and DTS content of a DVD-Audio disc, so at least you can listen to your DVD-Audio titles, just not at full Hi Res.

Doesn't this come from the power rating sticker?:

120V @ 3.2A = 384W

The Xbox 360's PSU is rated 120V @ 5A but outputs 203W.

The peak power draw would be the ratings, but there is no way that anything can pull that continuously.

But it does have an off switch, rather than a standby button, so when not in use, switch it off. That's more than I'm able to do with my surround amp or dvd player.
