Default PS3 Audio Problem, HELP!!

So, I have had my PS3 since a few months after its launch back in 2006; its an original 60GB.

Now, I am going to explain the setup, and this might get a little confusing, so bear with me...

I have the PS3 connected to a Pioneer Elite receiver via HDMI.

I have the front outputs of the Pioneer Elite receiver going to a custom Response Audio Purity One vacuum tube line stage.

The Response Audio purity one was original constructed as a pure two channel preamp and thusly has NO HT bypass.

It does however have an LED volume control, so I level match with it and the Pioneer in order to make sure that the speakers are all at the same level.

This goes to a set of Odyssey Kismet mono blocks, out to my mains.

The issue?

So, I have just recently noticed it, and at first I thought it was an isolated incident.

While playing Modern Warfare 2 when that first came out, I was playing and out of no where out of the right channel was this MASSIVE shotgun blast. IT scared the living crap out of me, and I thought that my speakers had blown.

It continued to happen every so often in Modern Warfare 2, so I thought it was something to do with that particular game, and I lowered the volume.

Flash forward to the God of War 3 demo a few months back, and a similar thing happens. I died, hit the continue button, and the continue gong (or whatever you want to label it) is loud as all hell.

So now I am a little concerned...

Playing Demon Souls now, and am fighting the level 4-2 boss, and everything I use the Sword of Storms, the thunder effect out of the speaker is significantly louder then the rest of the game.

I fear that I am going to blow my speakers, and with all the money I spent on my 2-channel setup, I would lose my mind if my POS PS3 blew my speakers.

Does anyone have any idea what this might be? Has anyone experienced something similar?

I have tried multiple things. Nothing like this has happened on a Bluray.

Also, I thought maybe I was clipping the preamplifier, so I turned down the volume on that to no solution to the situation.

I have the receiver on -30 while all this is happening BTW, so not anywhere near reference.

I am totally at a loss for what the problem could be. Anyone have any suggestions?

Since you can reproduce the problem, try to isolate the source:
  • Remove your amp from the setup (use the receiver or something as the amp temporarily).
  • Remove your speakers from the setup (Hook your PS3 up to TV speakers and see if it still happens)
  • Try someone else's PS3 if possible in place of your own
  • Anything else you can think of to isolate the problem to a specific piece of equipment

Its not the amplifiers because I had another set of amplifiers before these came in, and had the same problem.

Its not the speakers, because they work absolutely fine for everything else.

It could be the receiver, theoretically, but the problem does not happen on Blurays or DVDs; only video games.

I am thinking it also might be some interaction between the preamp and the receiver; not working together very well.

I'll have to mess around some more.

The key when isolating the issue is to keep things as constant as possible. Don't assume that because DVD/BD's work or anything else does that games should as well. If it happened with your old amp too then you can scratch that one off, but there are still lots of points of failure to look into (other equipment, cables, etc).

Once you find out more information let us know. Good luck!

I had a somewhat similar problem. The problem was that I was using a 2-RCA cable to connect my subwoofer, and just using 1 of the plugs. The remaining plug was loose, because I didn't want to cut the cable. Sometimes I would kick the desk by accident, and that loose cable would touch one of the banana plugs, and make a REALLY loud pop. I then got a 2-RCA to 1-RCA converter, and that solved the problem, but only for some time. I'm using the Premium RCA cables from MonoPrice, so they are a little heavy. I soon realized that the weight of the cable was cracking the converter in half, so the popping noise came back.

Finally, I just got a proper digital coaxial cable (1-RCA), and the problem is gone since then. So yeah, nothing was wrong, is just that there was so many cables back there, that if some of them touched by accident, it would created the popping sound.
