Default PS3 5.1 Audio problem

I've been using my ps3 as a blu/dvd player with all the formats my receiver can support for years. I just downloaded an HD episode of Lost from the psn store. The description said 5.1, so when It started playing it defaulted to stereo, but I hit the audio option button. It said English 2, but there is no sound. I hit select and it said i was some form of compressed AAC 5.1, i don't see any audio options on the ps3 for additional compressed 5.1 formats, just larger pcm stereo options..

Make sure you are connected to your AV receiver with HDMI, then go into the PS3's Audio Output Settings and make sure that the AAC option is NOT checked off. This way the the PS3 will internally decode the AAC 5.1 and send it to the AV receiver as a multi-channel PCM. also make sure that in the Video Settings the BD/DVD Audio Output Format(HDMI) is set to Linear PCM

My receiver can only support optical, a new receiver is my next upgrade. I thought it might be an hdmi issue, but then i thought wouldn't to be a pretty small audio mix compared to dvds even for a download video, something optcal could handle?

the problem is that your receiver is unable to decode AAC so the PS3 has to do it instead but it cannot output a multi-channel PCM over optical. Optical can only support a 2 channel PCM

Thanks, i don't download much from psn video store anyway. Glad to know that wasn't their way of saying "we'll have 5.1 eventually" either

And make sure to select the second audio track while playing the video. That's usually the 5.1 track. It'll also be the default track on every subsequent viewing.
