Default Paramount Jack Ryan HD DVD lacks special features?

Quote:
In what may end up being the biggest packaging blunder yet for a high-def title, Paramount's 'Jack Ryan Collection' HD DVD appears to have shipped to retail in a deluxe "Special Collectors Edition" box set that contains none of its advertised bonus features.

First announced earlier this summer, the four-disc 'Jack Ryan Collection' was originally planned for dual-format release on September 25. Although the studio would eventually scrap the Blu-ray version and push back the street date by nearly a month to October 23, the box set remained among the more highly-anticipated titles of the season.

Now, with the set's official street date only a week away, the HD DVD edition of 'The Jack Ryan Collection' has begun shipping to retail, but fans who were initially delighted to snap up early copies of the set began noticing something strange as they dived into the four-disc set.

As first reported yesterday by fans on several forums (including our own), despite the "Special Collector's Edition" label clearly stamped across the front cover of each disc in the set, and a list of bonus features promoted on the box art (including audio commentaries, featurettes, and more), as yet no one has been able to find the advertised supplementary material on any of the actual discs.

We here at High-Def Digest received our own copy of the final product direct from Paramount on Monday, and after combing through each disc, we too were unable to find a single supplemental feature anywhere on the entire set.

At press time, Paramount had not yet responded to a request for a comment on the apparent packaging snafu, but we'll keep you posted as soon as any official information comes in on the matter. Stay tuned...

Ahhh, Paramount. You do HD-DVD proud.

You gotta love Bracke and his editorializing. Paramount did more than scrap the Blu-ray version. They were paid off not to release it. A fact you know to be true.

Wow! If that ends up being true, that is an incredible blunder!

What is wrong with Paramount? How could a company that brought us great movies like the Indiana Jones trilogy have gone so wrong?

Will I think that Paramount employs monkeys. Not the smart cute kind, the dumb kind with red asses.

1) Lucas and Spielberg are why we have Indy Jones, not Paramount. They just happened to be the lucky studio that got it.

2) Paramount has already shown a great lack of judgement when they dropped Blu-ray.

3) How many discs would Blu-ray have needed to have all the movies AND the special features? Four. But I am sure these four hd-dvd discs are already full.

Just a great example of why Blu is the way to go.

I guess they re-used the original blu-ray packaging and just re-printed HD-DVD across the top .. forgetting HD-DVD didn't have enough space to actually fit it all and they had to be dropped.

Nothing lays it out clearer than this...we all get shortchanged in the end..even the HD DVD people that think they "won" with Paramounts defection. You've been bamboozled. Admit it and move on to a better format.

People chose blu-ray based on research as the better format and HD DVD has survived on FUD and misinformation because a few yahoos have misled people down this path of mediocrity.

From fiasco to fiasco...wow. Just wow.

Maybe Paramount is actually working for the BDA? They sure as hell are doing a magnificent job of sabatoging and showing the inadequacies of HD DVD in their first couple of "big" days on the job..

Someone needs to change the title of this to read "Paramound HD-DVD Lacks Special Features".

I was going to edit this after I typo'ed Paramount with Paramound..on second thought...leave it.

Paramound of...

HD-DVD's new slogan should be: "Lossless audio or extras? We'll flip a coin, since we can't fit both on a disc"

HD-DVD SUPPORTERS REACT

Quote:
As has been noted, despite listing them on back of each cover and branding each disc with its Special Collector's Edition banner, none of the special features (Commentaries, Featurettes, Trailers) are accessible on the disc. Just as with Top Gun, the only menu options you are given are PAUSE, SETTINGS, and SCENES. There is no HOME and no SPECIAL FEATURES buttons!!! To say I'm pissed is a huge understatement. I WANT MY DISCS TO BE HIGH DEFINITION DVDS NOT HIGH DEFINITION VHS TAPES!!!!
Good to see our "friend" Dave take part. Think he is goint to urge people to cancel their orders?

Enjoy your low bandwidth, 30gb format you twits!

I can't wait for the official explanation. Will they replace everyone's discs...or just the packaging?

jeez, every one of these little blunders by the HDDVD group (no HD audio on TF, spielberg movie snafus, Jack Ryan screwup) show me time and again that these tools are doing the bare minimum to put out their version of an "HD" product. This lack of quality control tells me one thing - that they want to invest AS LITTLE AS POSSIBLE into this format, so that it will be that much easier to drop it in favor of downloads (remember one of the speculations on why M$ is even INVOLVED in this HD war?) once BR is dead (tho I figure that ain't happening). And No, the $150 mill PAYOFF was not an investment in so much as actually DEVELOPING the HDDVD format, but to try to kill BR. meanwhile the BR group does a much better job (IMO) of quality control. In fact, some of the "dogs" in BR releases were PORTS FROM HDDVD ENCODES.
