I think of this purchase exactly like that (purchasing a new car). I understand the PS3 is a great Blu-Ray Player. Great engine under the hood, performs like a dream. But to me it looks like a rusty old Gremlin.
Now the Samsung BD-P1400 that a couple of people suggested on this thread... After reading the specs on it, checking it out on Amazon, and reading the manual at samsung.com, I had what I can only describe as a Blu-gasam. This is what I'm looking for. 1.3 HDMI compatibility, ethernet port, ect... Also I've had good experiences with Samsung. My upconverting DVD player (the HD860) was a dream to use.

Of course, the specs don't mean much if it doesn't perform. I mean it clearly has the horsepower under the hood. But, what does that mean when the rubber meets the road? Anyone have any hands on experience with it?

I've had good luck with the sales people demoing this sort of thing for me, but nothing beats personal experience.
Yes, as far as technology & looks it is one of the best standalones if not the best one right now. I wish you the best & if you end up getting it believe me you won't be disappointed.

Sorry, no digital camera, but I'll try to describe what I have and how the set-up is restrictive.

Equipment:

Panasonic 42pz700 Plasma
Toshiba HD-A20
Samsung HD860
Onkyo TS-SR605 Receiver
Klipsch Reference series surround speakers(not sure of the models)
Jamo E8SUB.2 subwoofer
Motorola DCT-6216(?) digital PVR
Sony SLV-N900 VCR
(some items I won through contests at work, some I've bought at supplier discounts, The TV I scrimped and saved for, and only just got)

Set-up:

All of these devices (with the exception of the speakers + woofer)are in a narrow column under the TV.
All of the devices are of the same width, and are very uniform in design.
Everything is hooked up with the highest grade of cables. (mostly Monster brand)
There are no exposed cables where people can see. I've outlawed gaming systems because most have long cabled controllers dangling on the floor, and don't fit on the shelves of the column.
The speakers are wall mounted (except the sub-woofer) and positioned around the room for MAX effect.
I use the Harmony H659 to control everything, therefore only 1 remote in the living room.

The Result:

Everything looks clean and orderly. My living room is a very inviting space with little to no clutter.

The PS3 is the wrong shape and size to have a place on the column. My plan is to replace the Samsung HD860 with a similar width Blu-Ray player. Also, the curved lines of the PS3 would make it look out of place. I don't want to have to put up an extra shelf for a gaming console, just so I can watch Blu-Ray, when there are stand alone players that would give me the same effect I have right now.

I really get that PS3 is probably the better Blu-Ray Player. Frankly, I wouldn't use the extra features everyone extols. I want Awesome pictures and sound. I want access to all the special features on the disk. I really just want Ratatoullie and Cars in HD, without reconfiguring my whole life.

Did you also know that through a wireless network you can stream video files & MP3s from any computer on that network through your home theatre system on a PS3 (60GB or 80GB model only... 40GB will have to be wired to the network)? And, you can access the internet on the PS3 (check e-mail, visit all of your favourite "stupid video" sites, etc)? And, via the FREE Playstation Store, you can d/load HD previews of upcoming theatrical releases to watch on your big screen. There are tons of additional positives with the PS3 that make it a versatile HOME MEDIA UNIT beyond simply a game machine and Blu-ray player. And, best of all, it costs less!

But, if all of that isn't worth the slight "eyesoar" then feel free to spend up to $300-$400 more on a player that only does 2 of the many things a PS3 can do (play Blu-ray and upscale DVD).

Just out of curiosity, do you have a photo of your setup? I'm curious to see why it would "look bad" with your home theatre room.
I know the fact he doesn't like the look it, but...then again functionality would be the main issue here. I am providing an important info, he/she is asking about price and functionality/compatibility. The look of the system, isn't the issue here. The system "PS3" could and can deliver everything he/she is looking for. That is all what i am trying to say. YOU MUST LOOK BEYOND THE COVER OF THE BOOK. in other words, DON'T JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER. Is what i am getting at.

Ok. In that case I also recommend the Samsung BD-P1400. I've talked to a couple of people personally who have been more than happy with its performance. I'm sure that you will enjoy regardless.

P.S. PS3 has wireless controllers

Default Thank you, all!

You have all been extremely helpful. I admit, I was put off for a bit by the level of intensity in most of the posts, supporting Blu-Ray to the exclusion of other formats( sometimes very emotional diatribes). I was afraid to post because I thought I would start a flame war. You've all been very welcoming to me.

It may not be the preferred opinion, but I really think both formats have awesome things to offer, and I'm looking forward to getting my Blu-Ray player very soon.

IMHO I think the worst thing any Studio could do is be one format exclusive. I include Sony with this bold statement. If every studio had released their movies on both formats, I think the war would not have happened. People would simply choose the player they wanted, and no-body's feelings would have been hurt. Early adopters could have bought what they wanted without worrying what titles they could enjoy. We wouldn't be talking about crushing the competition. It would have already happened. Quietly, and with very little fuss, or loss of profit.

Living in the real world however. I MUST have both formats. I love movies too much to be forced to choose. High Definition is too enjoyable. Upconverting players are useful, but the result just doesn't compete with the real thing.

I reiterate; I refuse to choose just 50% of the titles I want. I want them all! Thank-you for not flaming me because of this. I appreciate all your helpful comments, even from the PS3 fanatics out there

I'm pretty sure I want the Samsung BD-P1400 player now. It seems to answer all the requirements I have.

Now I just have one last favor on this thread.

Can anyone tell me their personal experience with this player? Does anyone own one, and just want to brag? I want to know I'm making the right choice here. I would really value some personal testimony.

Thanks again guys!

The only reason why Sony can not support Hd-Dvd and put their movies on Hd-Dvd is because Microsoft and Sony are enemies and they cant get along very well and they are always competiting against eachother and thats how microsoft helped make hd-dvd a possibility as for sony they helped make blu-ray a possibility for what they think will be the next generation format after this format war is over with. Other companies such as Disney, WB, Fox, etc. it just depends on what they think is better sure warner brothers is smart to release their movies on both formats unlike paramount going hd-dvd exclusive and Universal being hd-dvd exclusive since the beginning but the companies just want to put their movies on what format they think is superior except for paramount they just took that money toshiba gave them without even a 2nd thought. and also we wont attack you unless you attack us first but otherwise 95% of the people on here are very good people and wont be upset if you like both formats because there is good amount of people on here who are neutral just like you just have support in Blu-Ray and dont say anything negative about it and we wont have to attack you simple as that.

I have reviewed the samsung BD-P1400 on this site. Just enter the model number in the search field and you will find it. I love the player, couldn't be happier!

Well if you don't like the ps3 then I think your best bet would be getting the Samsung duel player. It will be out in about two months cost around 899.00 and the blu-ray side will be at leased 1.1 if not profile 2.0. Then you can sell your hd dvd player for 99 bucks and you have one nice looking player.

I think the most important thing to note here is, whether or not the player looks good, they are all going to look better than HD-DVD (which is only made by Toshiba right now).
I hope the advice people have given you helps, just make sure you get the specs right FIRST (i.e. the HDMI cable, AV receiver, 1080p HDTV, BD player) and the looks of the components and price come second. So even though you are set on not getting a PS3, there are lots of good BD players out now. But I recommend whatever you do, if you are not going to get a PS3, wait just a little bit till the new players are out, the ones that can support the FULL Blu-ray profile, with PiP. Only the PS3 can run it now (with the update to come out soon), but there will be more before the year is out.

Well .............That happened to me at first because I'm Dual format but not as bad as you make it out to be....lol.....but it seems the more I'm posting the nicer and more helpful everybody's been + I've learned a lot about BOTH formats on this site. I have the Sony300 & the Tosh A20 and I like 'em both. I'm usually doing something else during the loads but I think it's between 30-40 seconds and it really doesnt bother me in the least.
I'm an old guy(50) so I am not versed in the PS3 or the XBOX as far as gaming or BD reproduction is concerned.

Thats what im using (I dont play standard dvd's in my PS3) I think it has an excellent picture...only thing I can even fault it for is the fact it doesnt stay locked on upconvert...I hate having to go into the menu and keep setting it to 1080i. But it does a great job all around.

I went for a PS3 as that is the only Blu Ray player that I know of that has a HDMI 1.3 compatible.

from what I have read about 90% of us own a PS3 as our Blu Ray player.

well i saw a blu-ray player that was the same price as the 60 GB Blu-Ray player but to get a Blu-Ray player and a video gaming machine all in one for the same price is more worth it and besides in the future it will be like the playstation 2 where like every gamer had at least a PS2 and then later on better games will come out and then going to end up getting one anyways. now its just a matter of buy it now or buy it when a 120 GB hard drive is available
