I still love the story of Monsters Inc....but Rat and Up are right there.

I think Incredibles could have had a shot (I can't remember what won or what was nomiated that year).

Up is a great movie, and I think it should at least be nominated. Animation constantly is frowned upon in our country for whatever reeason (I suspect that it is still viewed as 'kids' entertainment), which will keep Up from winning, even if nominated. However, I thought the same thing about fantasy, and look what happened with Return of the King

With 10 entries, especially, it would be a crime to not at least nominate Up.

If Beauty and the Beast were made today, then it would have a shot against the current films which will likely be nominated...... but even it probably wouldn't win......

Ponyo doesn't have a chance. I loved Ponyo but Up is better overall. Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away were the two Miyazaki films that would have the best chances Ponyo isn't quite up there.

Without a doubt, Up was my fave film of last year, and many of you would put it as one of the best films of last year also. But my friend has a stereotypical view on Animation films, looking at them and saying that they are childish and incapable of having emotion and a good story. I told him he was wrong and that it so good that it was capable of receiving a best film nomination, he said no way, I said yes way. Now we have a tenner bet.
Your friend needs to watch 9. And in answering your question yes it does deserve and Oscar Nom.

No. Coraline was beautifully captured, but too "creepy" for abundant mainstream love.

Ponyo is too simply rendered.

I dont think there is an arguement that can be made. That portion of the film was some of the evocative minutes of all cinema for me. I felt like standing and applauding, except I was too weak in the knees.

I remember showing it to my study partner who rarely shows any sentimentality or emotion, and even she teared up.

So, who agrees with Jade that the film is depressing as a whole? I think the ending is beautiful and uplifting.

In a way, I compare it a bit to The Fountain. That film was almost unbearably sad but I still thought the movie was uplifting as a whole because of what I personally deem to be Tommy's realization and acceptance at the end.

My wife and I, our neighbors (on both sides) and neighbor across the street....... we all have kids ranging from "New" to 12 years old..... and we all thought it was very "dark" and "deep" for a children's movie (if you want to argue that it's simply not a "Children's" movie, I'd agree, since Pixar always offers up something for the adults too..... but it's targeted at children....)

It does have a lot of happy moments in it...... but most of the movie is a constant reminder of
[Show spoiler] Ellie's death Also, The "broken Home" of the kid.... etc

I've said it before in some other thread, but I'll repost it here:

Up would've been great as a Pixar Short, but as an 80 minute movie I'd rank it among Pixar's worst (which isn't much of an insult, I guess).

I think it has a chance to get nominated because of the 10 spots, and a somewhat weak year for movies.

But the big difference between Up and Avatar, is that the latter would be nominated even if there were only 5 spots, so the "If the blue alien cats can be nominated, why can't Up" is the weakest of the arguments provided.

You don't ignore a movie that makes almost $2 billion in barely a month and a half.

Here's some Academy Award ratings:

1996: 44.81 million viewers
1997: 40.83 million viewers
1998: 57.25 million viewers
1999: 45.63 million viewers
2000: 46.53 million viewers

Here's a fun game:

Guess which year had Titanic?

Two years ago, the Oscars had 31.76 million viewers. They need a boost.

I was thinking of saying that, but I don't like drawing attention on it.

On my main post, all kept thinking was, there are so many up puns in here just by mistake.

I agree with you on most points, although I think ultimately the film is uplifting despite that constant reminder. But hey, that's the beauty of film--it can mean different things to different ppl.
