Default Something's afoot @ Wal-Mart?

Hey folks,

So I happened to stop in to Hell-on-Earth... er, ah... Wal-Mart the other night to pick up some odd's 'n ends and I decided to make a pit-stop into the electronics dept. Well, my-oh-my what a surprise! Now normaly, the Wal-Mart across from where I work (and most others I've been to in and around Vancouver) have had the same, pathetic looking Blu-ray display shared with HD-DVD. Usually four rows of BD, filed spine out and two rows of HD-DVD... filed the same way.

Not today.

Today, as I entered the section, I was immediatly greeted by a large square display, smothered in Blu propaganda and Sony LCD's and stocked (or very soon to be) with Blu-ray titles. It seems that this was a work in progress as most of the shelf space was empty and there were lots of unopened boxes scattered about the floor space around it.

Here's the best (though probably most unethical) part of it all. I started to scan the surrounding area for any sign of HD-DVD... looking... looking...

AH-HA! there they are... ON THE BACKSIDE OF THE BLU-RAY DISPLAY!

This display is SMOTHERED in Blu-ray... from facts about the format to logos... hell it's even topped off by a nice looking laser-cut metal sign at the top of each side that says "Beyond Hi-Definition".

Now it would seem to me that the staff needed someplace to dump the HD-DVD's they hadleft and found the ass-end of the display to be the best area. I took a chance and asked one of the staff puttering around the floor if he knew what was going on with thier HD-DVD stock. His reply... "I dunno. We're not getting them in anymore. Didn't even get Transformers. We're only supposed to stock the other one now" "The other one" I asked him. "You mean Blu-ray?"

"Yeah. We're only carrying Blu-ray"

Huh. Interesting. Blu only and no Transformers on HD-DVD. Suddenly Hell-on-Earth just got a little better.

I saw the same happening in my local Walmart as well. Last week they had about 25 titles in Blu and 10-11 titles in HD-DVD. This monday I stopped by Walmart to check if the had Dave Mathews' Blu-Ray convert (they did not unfortunately) but caught the Walmart guys busy re-arranging the Blu-ray display. Now they have a pretty large end cap display filled with Blu to the top. I managed to find just 5 or 6 HD-DVD titles mixed in with some other"value" SD DVD releases at the far end of the isle. Moreover, all of the LCDs on the wall were playing a Blu-ray promo. Very impressive for Walmart.

A Strange Brew fan? Yeah, it was a nice thing to see in an otherwise horrid place (said horrid place being Wal-Mart)

I hope the Wally World I work at does the same thing. We have the same 4/2 Bd/Hd dvd end cap there. We also started to carry a 720p 32" Sony Bravia LCD for around $850.

Hey, did you read the other post on Walmart. Someone just wrote up a post that Walmart is bringing in a 198.00 HD-DVD player. If you look up the thread on this it is somewhere here, about a hour ago.

My comment is that a player at $198.00 is not going to be any good.

The videophile market will not be won by people who are hesitant to pay for quality.

Just the fact they are making the layout much better is great news. I look the odd time while in Wal-Mart but I hate the fact they stack the movies in rows BACK to FRONT! (That's okay for HDDVD since they don't sell that many anyhow).

Even putting them sideways would be so much easier to find the titles.

If you read it, it was from a website that got the info from an AVS post, by a walmart employee. It also stated "IF this is true......"

To much hear-say, nothing official.

It could be the discontinued models on clearance too.

Good Points, but I was just pointing out the fact that news is floating out there. I agree, until something official is annouced by Walmart, don't believe it.

Working for a Wal Mart here in Fishers, I have yet to see or hear anything about the Venturer Hd Dvd player coming in at all. In fact I haven't seen any BD players either.

It appears Walmart is reconfiguring its movies section. I went yesterday as usual to check for BD bargain and found out that everything was mixed up DVD and BD crossing paths. One of the guys that were rearranging things told me that by next week I should be able to browse the BD section with much ease. He was in the Games section when we talked. To me it seems that something huge is waiting to happen. He was all smiling when I asked about blu-ray disc as if he finally had found someone somehow aware of the new technology.
I am gonna check again this coming Sunday. I live in Miami and it's the Walmart at 163rd Street.

...to be continued
