Default Oppo BDP-83 VS Denon DBP-2010

So I was in Best Buy the other day taking a look at the Denon BDP-2010 and it seems to be a fairly solid player. I have been looking at a player that does an excellent job upconverting my massive DVD collection (I currently own a Sony BDP-S560 and the upconverting leaves much to be desired) and certainly the Denon and an Oppo BDP-83 can do it. Both players have the Anchor Bay VRS chip in it, which is definitely the way I want to go. I cant get the Denon for roughly $440 including tax (normally $699 retail) and the Oppo for $517 including shipping. The Oppo has several other playback capabilities that I really have no use for, whereas the Denon would be slightly cheaper and sticks to what I would really use. Any suggestions with which I should pick?

This is my first Oppo product. I'm very impressed with the care that they take to package these units, which I'm sure is the same with all their products. I've read all the positives about this company and their gear, and only had high expectations. So far they absolutely do not disappoint.

The ABT2010 is a mighty fine chip, but there's more to it than just having the chip there. I don't know how well the overall implementation of ABT2010 and SoC combine on the BDP-2010 relative to the BDP-83. I suspect it compares well, but just haven't spent any time with it to know how it compares. OPPO also provides excellent support (firmware updates, etc.).

I would consider either choice to be a good one. My preference is toward the OPPO, but that's also the player that I have more experience with and that probably influences me.

it really depends on what your current and future needs are. do you think you might want to try dvd-audio or sacds in the future? will you need analog outs?

for what its worth, i think you've already answered your question.

You also should consider: 1) operating characteristics--the Oppo is very quick in terms of loading etc., some other players are not, 2) support--the Oppo does a great job with firmware updates and playing all manner of Blu-ray discs; some other brands do not and 3) while you discount it, the Oppo is an excellent universal player; it costs a little more but the cost is justified by the increased flexibility in playing disc formats. But to each their own.

Keep in mind the Denon does not have the same ABT2010 that the Oppo does. It is a lower level chip also found in Denon AVR's and a few other units.

I didn't know there were different versions of the ABT2010. I know there are a number of different ABT chips (like the ABT1015 and ABT1030), and Denon uses those in some products.

I'm sorry, I meant it does not use the same chip (2010) as the Oppo. The Denon 2010 uses the ABT1030. To my knowledge...

I can't speak about the Denon but all I can tell you is that I'm currently watching Sarah Connor Chronicles on standard dvd on my OPPO BDP 83 and the picture looks absolutely fantastic. Same goes for the rest of the dvds that I have watched on it. Sometimes I can't even justify double dipping on some titles when they already look so good on this player.

You are exactly correct! The BDP-2010 uses the ABT1030 and the BDP-4010 uses the ABT2010. Based on that, I'd certainly vote for the BDP-83.

The Oppo is nice, but what type AV/R do you have? Denon receivers 2310 and up have the Anchor Bay chip the Oppo has. the Denon analog is better than the Oppo. Any way you look at it, Its a win-win for you....
