Default Mr. Brooks is f----ing great

For those of you who have reservations about picking up a Kevin Costner flick on BD. Fear not!! This movie is amazing. If not for Costner's not so half bad acting but for William Hurt's maniacal performance. I love this movie and was so hyped to learn that it is a BD exclusive.

Great for a suspense thriller flick.

Check it out guys

Agreed. I thought this was a great movie when I saw it in the theater. It seems like William Hurt stole most of the scenes he was in, but that's part of the reason why I try to catch all Hurt pictures. Save for "A History of Violence", he's been great in almost everything he's been in.

This movie was great! It was whitty and very intelligent. I didn't even mind Dane Cook's(who I don't like as an actor) performance. Great flick.

Hurt must have stole the scenes if it was great, it couldn't be because of Costner. As much as I don't like him, now I am interested to see this movie. Did you not like "A History of Violence"?

It was okay. I very much liked the idea of the movie but was disappointed in the ending. I don't know if Hurt was mis-cast for that film or if something else was going on. But I didn't like him in that role as much as his other performances.

After seeing him in "History of Violence" I was concerned that Hurt might on the decline. But "Mr. Brooks" layed that question to rest, as Hurt was brilliant there.

Fair enough, I thought he was pretty good in A History of Violence and was nominated for best supporting from what I remember

I will put this movie on my list to get.

thanks

Wow, you're right about the nomination - for best supporting actor. I've talked to other Hurt fans who felt as I do about his performance in that movie. In any case, Hurt on a bad day is still better than most actors may ever achieve :-)

All I can say is that I really liked "Brooks" and largely because of Hurt's performance. At the end of the movie, I found myself wishing for a sequel.

...I hated this movie. I never believed Costner's character for a second - he underplayed the role IMO. Hurt's contribution was inconsequential. From what I could tell through the poor acting, the script seemed like it could have been good. When it was over (I watched it on an international flight) I just said to myself "what a waste of time" (and I was trapped on a plane so that's saying a lot).

I really liked this movie too. I can't think of any movie I'd like while watching on an international flight, but that's another matter. I liked the script and thought it was a very entertaining film. I saw this movie in the middle of seeing Pirates 3, Shrek and Fantastic Four 2 so maybe anything semi-intellectual and character driven with a plot would have seemed interesting just to be fair. Either way, I was entertained and look forward to it on blu ray. I'm even looking forward to the special features on this one, which includes coming up with the script for the movie.

Dances with Wolves is one of the best movies ever made?

Oh wait, you're Canadian right?

Costner should stick to baseball movies.

I enjoyed Mr. Brooks quite a bit as well. i wasn't really expecting to, which is great, because I love when I go into a movie with low expectations and am pleasantly surprised. T3 had the same effect. I want to get this, but the Fox pricing is kinda putting me off.

I've never seen Mr. Brooks, but I'm about to go make it a blind buy. I really like these kinds of movies, and have to get it. I hope that most of you have the same tastes a me, because the reviewers are trashing it pretty bad.

I think William Hurt is an amazing actor and I always look forward to seeing his movies. In my opinion his best role so far was in Altered States, but I loved his character in Dark City and I thought he was good in the History of Violence as well. Up until that point I've never seen him play a villain.

Call me crazy, but I'm a little befuddled by everyone's commentary on William Hurt. While he is a great actor, he had clearly been in decline for a long time until "History of Violence". While some here have mentioned "Dark City", I'm not sure many thought that was a very good movie and pretty sure Hurt hadn't been in a great role since 1988 in "The Accidental Tourist"... nice little 17-year slump (AI, The Village, Lost In Space?... let's get real). Then when mentioning his greatest roles people correctly list "Altered States" but neglect "Kiss of the Spider Woman", "Body Heat", "The Big Chill", "Broadcast News" or "Children of a Lesser God". Seems suspect.

I watched it last night. very good. costner's best movie in awhile. I think ed norton should've played dane cook's role though. for some reason I think norton would of nailed it dead-on.

I recall that "Dark City" was voted by many critics as the best DVD of 1998, although it wasn't giant at the box office. Would love to see this on blu-ray, which is a possibility given that it was a New Line release.

I think he was great in many of those movies you mentioned, although I agree he was wasted in Lost in Space, The Village, AI, etc. 17 year slump? Are you forgetting "Until the End of the World?" :-) "Searching, still searching, ..."

By chance did you catch him in the "Battleground" episode of "Nightmares and Dreamscapes: From the Stories of Steven King"? I thought he was great in that too. He played a hit man, and I don't think he uttered a word in the entire episode, even though he was the lead actor.

"Battleground" and "Mr. Brooks" show that he can be a really good villain. I suppose I need to give "History of Violence" a second chance to see if it confirms my lackluster memory of his performance.
