Default Question about movie studio alliance.

Hello, I have a PS3 and I have recently been buying Blu-ray movies (after months on the side waiting) I see now that Blu-ray seems to be ahead in the software sales. I know that dreamworks and paramount have timed exclusivity to HD DVD, But what studios are exclusive to Blu-ray and what studios are multiplatform for now? Also is there really a scratch resistant coating on all blu-rays? including PS3 games? How are standalone player sales vs HD DVD. I notice that the HDDVD camp seems to dismiss PS3's as Blu-ray players. I am 100% confident that I have made the right choice. Glad I waited a bit.

Studios:

Sony Pictures, Twentieth Century Fox, Walt Disney, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, and Lionsgate all exclusively support Blu-Ray.

Universal Studios, Paramount, and Dreamworks exclusively support HD DVD.

Warner Brothers releases their films in both formats, but some of their films (Like Batman Begins and V for Vendetta) have only been released on HD DVD. But these films will be released on Blu-Ray in the future. The reason they were released only on HD DVD is because interactive features, such as picture in picture, have not yet been finalized on Blu-Ray.

New Line Cinema also releases their films on both formats, but their new movie releases (Like Hairspray and Rush Hour 3) will be released on DVD and Blu-Ray only at first since HD DVD lacks region coding. But all their previous movies they might release will be simultaneously released on both formats.

Yes there is scratch resistant coding on all Blu-Ray discs because the data is so close to the surface, so they decided to protect it by putting this protection on it. And this protection has to be on all Blu-Ray discs.

I'm not sure, but I think in August, Sony and the other companies behind Blu-Ray said that standalone Blu-Ray players have started to outsell HD DVD players.

The HD DVD camp dismisses the PS3 because they say that gamers won't buy movies.

no it is because they want to try and pretend they are winning somewhere.

yup BD had more sales for several weeks. That is when Toshiba came out with SI is the only important data and they are still ahead in that (I think it was around 54:46 if I remember correctly.

the only problem with making a distinction like that is that you end up with inconsistencies for example Dreamworks and Paramount are owned by the same company which is why we had both make the same announcement the same time. So is Warner and NL. On the other hand Sony owns Columbia, Disney owns touchstone....... so it is hard to make a good distribution of films that show the reality of the situation.

You definitely made the right choice getting the PS3 and Blu-Ray. Yet another member from Alberta (Calgary nonetheless). I'm so glad Calgary beat Edmonton yesterday!!

Also, dont' forget that apart from studio support, Blu-Ray has a LOT of manufacturer support. That's extremely important as well.

Btw there are 32 Paramount/DreamWorks movies that were released on Blu-ray disc, so if you're interested in those movie titles, look for them.
