Default Biggest Oscar Snubs or Nominees That Should Have Won

In your opinion what is the biggest Oscar snub ever? It could be for a movie, actor, director, writer, ect that did not win the award, but should have.

In 1938, Bette Davis won the Best Actress award for Jezebel. In my opinion, Katherine Hepburn should have won for her performance in Bringing Up Baby (1938). Hepburn's performance was truly a memorable one, and Bringing Up Baby is one of the most revered comedies of all time. There's no doubt that the great chemistry between Hepburn and Grant was a major factor in the success of the movie, but she was just fantastic....

I know Bruce Pullen did a similar thread in 2009, but I thought it would be a good idea to start fresh.

Michael Clarke Duncan not getting Best Supporting for Green Mile. That performance was beyond heartbreaking. Now he makes crappy comedies.

I still don't know how Springsteen's "The Wrestler" wasn't even nominated for best song.

ALWAYS a good idea--That way, we'll have a thread that's actually interested in the responses, not bragging how many they Got ('Em).

And the one to start of with is always, okay, how many people today think The Right Stuff WON Best Picture?
(Yep, once the press thought they had a story on "Is this movie promoting John Glenn's campaign?", you just could not shut them up. )

And does anyone today have any associations with "A Beautiful Mind" besides "The one that stole the award away from Fellowship of the Ring"?...Do people today remember anything else about the movie??

Nine Inch Nail's The Perfect Drug didn't even get an Oscar nomination. Academy doesn't know music.

Not a snub at all. Finch was brilliant. Stallone was being Stallone.

I would think it would be better to "question" the Peoples Choice awards as they are voted on by normal people, an as such more open to debate.

Oscars are voted upon by members of the Academy. And often do not conform with what the average veiwer may think is best, nor should they.

A shame, too . . . might have been the only time it was performed live.

A huge shame. The only reason I get pissed when the music nominees suck because those are our performances.

It would have been a memorable Oscar and I'd like to see what Reznor would have done in that environment or that drum solo. Jeeze.

Three that come to mind.
1) I think Paul Giamatti should have been nominated over Thomas Hayden Church for Sideweays and he should have won
2) I still think Robert Downey Jr's performance in Chaplin was more deserving than Al Pacino's in Scent Of A Woman
3) I think Tom Cruises performance in Rain Man deserved at least a nomination because his character went from hating his brother at the beginning of the film to genuinely loving and wanting to take care of him by the end. A much harder feat to pull off tham Hoffman's one note chracter.

Saving Private Ryan losing to Shakespeare in Love
Shakespeare in Love is a good movie, but it is no where near the caliber of Saving Private Ryan.

Brokeback Mountain losing to Crash
Still can't believe this one. Crash wasn't even that great of a movie imo. Brokeback should have taken that.

Judi Dench in Iris losing to Halle Berry in Monster's Ball
I'm sorry but there is absolutely no comparison here. Dench got snubbed big time. Terrible decision by the Academy.

One of my very favorite films. I love it.

______________

Now snub wise I would go with 1979 and 'Apocalypse Now' missing out on 'Best Director', 'Best Picture' and MOST OF ALL 'Best Screenplay'.

I think ppl need to understand that snub refers to a film, director, actor, etc. not being nominated and not that they were nominated and didn't win.

I am in total disagreement here. It is extraordinarily difficult to pull off a character with a mental handicap and make it believable. Hoffman's performance in Rain Man and DDL's performance in My Left Foot are the two that come to mind when I think of mesmerizing performances with that kind of crutch in your character.

A few in the past decade immediately come to mind:

Hotel Rwanda not getting a best picture nom in a weak year.

Joe Wright not getting a best director nom for Atonement, which was far and away the best directing of the year (with the tracking shot being the best directed scene)

Bruno Ganz not getting a best actor nod for Downfall, one of the best performances of all-time.

There are many, many more (especially foreign and documentary films not getting best picture nods, but that list could go on forever)

here's some more:

Emile Hirsch for best actor in Into the Wild, easily one of the best performances of the year

there are innumerable choices here for best score, such as The Fountain, Requiem for a Dream, Gattaca, etc etc etc

I thought Scorsese finally winning best director after all these years for the Departed was laughable... IMO one of his lesser films, and a remake at that.
