A few in the past decade immediately come to mind:
Hotel Rwanda not getting a best picture nom in a weak year. Joe Wright not getting a best director nom for Atonement, which was far and away the best directing of the year (with the tracking shot being the best directed scene) Bruno Ganz not getting a best actor nod for Downfall, one of the best performances of all-time. There are many, many more (especially foreign and documentary films not getting best picture nods, but that list could go on forever) |

I thought Scorsese finally winning best director after all these years for the Departed was laughable... IMO one of his lesser films, and a remake at that.

I'm in complete agreement with this. I can think of 6 or so films of his that are way better than The Departed. |

I feel Departed his is best, though I could change my mind. I haven't seen all of them. I'm trying to watch 2 more Scorseses before Shutter Island comes out.

Taxi Driver Mean Streets Raging Bull Casino Goodfellas Gangs of New York (and don't forget The Departed is a remake of Infernal Affairs, which I think is superior to The Departed) |

Gotta agree here. The Departed was not one of his best films, and was good but not great. It's not even remotely as good as Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, or Goodfellas. I also don't think it's as good as Mean Streets or the Aviator. |

My favorite Scorsese film is Raging Bull...now THAT is a huge snub. Its one of those movies that seem flawless to me. |

I think Taxi Driver is his best film, Goodfellas is my favorite, and Raging Bull is his best directing job. |

Note: These are mainly my opinions that these should have at the VERY LEAST been nominated, except with the case of Mr. Fox, which it should win this year but probably won't.
Laurence Fishburne - Boyz N The Hood (Best Supporting Actor) Children of Men (Best Picture/Best Director) Robert Downey Jr. - Two Girls & A Guy/Less Than Zero (Best Actor) Cate Blanchett - Veronica Guerin (Best Actress) Ben Stiller - The Royal Tenenbaums (Best Supporting Actor) And in the foresight category. The Fantastic Mr. Fox (Best Animated Feature). We all know Pixar will get it again whether they deserve it or not, but Mr. Fox was an incredible film! |

Two for this year...
Viggo Mortensen and Sam Rockwell for best actor in The Road and Moon, respectively. Phenomenal performances (the latter of which has been talked about a great deal on here). I wish Best Actor had been extended to 10 slots instead of Best Picture. Requiem for a Dream should have been nominated for Best Picture, in my opinion. If we're including nominated movies that didn't win, throw Citizen Kane up there, and for movies that weren't even nominated add City Lights.
In general, it's obligatory to mention Orson Welles and Charlie Chaplin, because both never got the Oscar-credit they deserved (Welles only received a screenplay Oscar for Kane, which he arguably didn't even write, and Chaplin received a "special" Oscar for The Circus... both also received honorary Oscars later in life). |

ones that immediately come to mind--
Clint Eastwood should have been nominated for IN THE LINE OF FIRE-- it was a great performance! Paul Newman should have won for THE VERDICT-- outstanding acting! Mel Gibson should have won (was he nominated? can't remember) for BRAVEHEART-- amazing emotion! |

I agree, Gibson should've been nominated. Ebert made a great point about his nostrils flaring in the lead up to the battle scene. |
