(Yep, once the press thought they had a story on "Is this movie promoting John Glenn's campaign?", you just could not shut them up. )

And does anyone today have any associations with "A Beautiful Mind" besides "The one that stole the award away from Fellowship of the Ring"?...Do people today remember anything else about the movie??

A remember quite a bit about A Beautiful Mind. Excellent film with an amazing performance by Crowe and Connelly.

Very good choice, he was terrific in that movie.

I'm in complete agreement with this. I can think of 6 or so films of his that are way better than The Departed.

I feel Departed his is best, though I could change my mind. I haven't seen all of them. I'm trying to watch 2 more Scorseses before Shutter Island comes out.

You think The Departed is better than:

Taxi Driver
Mean Streets
Raging Bull
Casino
Goodfellas
Gangs of New York

(and don't forget The Departed is a remake of Infernal Affairs, which I think is superior to The Departed)

I actually just listened to that song the other day for the first time in a while, and was reminded of how it wasn't nominated.

I don't think it's an issue of the Academy not knowing music, but that it didn't meet all the requirements to be nominated (namely that the song appeared during the credits, and that it needs to appear somewhere during the movie to be eligible).

They've recently changed how songs are selected yet again, and now all eligible songs are voted on, on a scale of 6-10. A song needs an average rating of 8.25 to be nominated, and if no songs receive that average, there will be no nominees that year. Such a weird idea, but oh well. Maybe they want to get rid of the category altogether, since they seem to not put much care into it to begin with.

I didn't know that was part of the criteria. That song captures Randy's character and the feel of the movie perfectly.

Note: These are mainly my opinions that these should have at the VERY LEAST been nominated, except with the case of Mr. Fox, which it should win this year but probably won't.

Laurence Fishburne - Boyz N The Hood (Best Supporting Actor)
Children of Men (Best Picture/Best Director)
Robert Downey Jr. - Two Girls & A Guy/Less Than Zero (Best Actor)
Cate Blanchett - Veronica Guerin (Best Actress)
Ben Stiller - The Royal Tenenbaums (Best Supporting Actor)

And in the foresight category.

The Fantastic Mr. Fox (Best Animated Feature).

We all know Pixar will get it again whether they deserve it or not, but Mr. Fox was an incredible film!

Alfred Hitchcock was nominated five times, but never won an Oscar for Best Director.

Two for this year...

Viggo Mortensen and Sam Rockwell for best actor in The Road and Moon, respectively. Phenomenal performances (the latter of which has been talked about a great deal on here). I wish Best Actor had been extended to 10 slots instead of Best Picture.

Requiem for a Dream should have been nominated for Best Picture, in my opinion.

If we're including nominated movies that didn't win, throw Citizen Kane up there, and for movies that weren't even nominated add City Lights.

In general, it's obligatory to mention Orson Welles and Charlie Chaplin, because both never got the Oscar-credit they deserved (Welles only received a screenplay Oscar for Kane, which he arguably didn't even write, and Chaplin received a "special" Oscar for The Circus... both also received honorary Oscars later in life).

Mean Streets One of the Scorseses I haven't seen
Raging Bull Didn't like it that much the first viewing but I want to rewatch it
Casino Haven't seen that might be one of the movies before Shutter
Goodfellas As much as I enjoyed it, I prefer Departed. I need to do a back to back viewing. Though I hate Ray Liotta
Gangs of New York Other pre Shutter Island movie I plan to watch

(and don't forget The Departed is a remake of Infernal Affairs, which I think is superior to The Departed)

Sometimes it doesn't need to appear during the movie. There have been instances like that, just can't remember. Besides they never get score right. Mansell is always snubbed.

More Snubs:

Sam Rockwell for Moon
Brad Pitt for Snatch, Fight Club, and Assassination of Jesse James
Djimon Houston for Blood Diamond
Edward Norton for Kingdom of Heaven, American History X

same with Kubrick! arguably, the two best directors ever! proof-positive that oscars aren't the best indicator.

Wow, so at the time(1976), you knew that Stallone in Rocky was just "Stallone being Stallone"?!?
I must've missed the tons of movies he made before Rocky!

Gotta agree here. The Departed was not one of his best films, and was good but not great. It's not even remotely as good as Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, or Goodfellas. I also don't think it's as good as Mean Streets or the Aviator.
