Nick Mason.

(Not because he's like an amazing drummer technique wise but he's on most every Pink Floyd song and that's all stuff that I love more than just about anything.)

I've been a drummer for over 20 years, and Danny Carey (Tool) and Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater) completely changed my approach to the instrument. Just listen to "Images and Words" from DT, that album is a drumming masterpiece. And all of Danny Carey's work is just flawless. They are truly Gods among drummers. Here are some of my other favorites:

Carter Beaufield (DMB)
Stuart Copeland
Steven Morris (Joy Division, New Order)
Eric Carr (Kiss)
John Bonham

Yay, finally another mention for Carter Beauford. His technique is just amazing. Glad someone else likes him.

You know, since your avatar has Animal in it, I've heard that Keith Moon was the inspiration for Animal's crazy personality and drum skills. Just saying.

Keith was known as being a bit of an animal on drums. Under a Raging Moon is a Great tribute Track from a great album of the same name by Roger Daltry (it includes performances by many of the great rock drummers):

No doubt. Have you ever seen Billy Kilson work a hi-hat?

I love how everyone is calling the new Fear Factory line up "Fat Factory." Burton C. Bell had better find a good hiding place on the tour bus for his travel rations!

Being a drummer my list could quite literally go on forever but here are a few of my favourites:

Gene Hoglan
Danny Carey
Thomas Hakke
Tim Alexander

Without a shadow of a doubt though, my favourite drummer is Ray Luzier. He is able to combine technicality, precision and originality plus showmanship all into one great package. I've been a fan for many years, however more recently his work in Army of Anyone with Richard Patrick was great (as I am a Filter fan) and now that he's with Korn that's even better as I have been a long time Korn fan and his drumming has brought a new dynamic to the songs.

Some vids showcasing his work:
Ray Luzier Instrumental Korn Medley Solo
Ray Luzier Instrumental Army of Anyone Studio Solo

The man makes playing everything look absolutely effortless.

If you like Meshuggah, check out Gojira. One of the more unique metal bands out there. Mario Duplantier is an awesome drummer.
