So does this blu-ray definitely, definitely have English subtitles? As usual, French sites are vague about the info for this blu-ray - English dub or English subtitles or both?

That's great news about the english subtitles.

However, the only customer review on amazon.fr gives it a very bad review, saying it's no better than the dvd. Could be in need of a guide dog or could be right. Not easy to tell based on one review.

Is there a review of this on the way. Pro-B perhaps?

Not cheap at the moment either.

I should have this in a day or two and I'm anxious to see it, but neither this review or the single customer review on amazon give me much hope. First off, to the original poster, this film is not Jacques Demy and Agnes Varda's The Young Girls of Rocherfort. She did not write, compose, nor direct the film - she was married to the director. Furthermore, her "restoration" of this film was not so good and it is that "restoration" that was the basis for the DVD, which was way too soft and looked nothing like the IB Tech prints (one of which I had). The real question is WHAT was scanned at 2K - the previous DVD master? It's really hard to tell, and Ms. Varda is simply not Jacques Demy and should leave the restorations to those who know what they're doing. I'll report back once I've seen it and am still hoping for the best.

Don't know why my original post about this hasn't shown up - is there some sort of censorship here? It was a pretty innocuous post.

In any case, I was petrified about this release due to someone on amazon.fr saying it was horrible and barely better than the DVD.

Well, perhaps he was watching it on a 1963 television, because I just popped it in and checked it out - and it is gorgeous.

I was not a fan of the "restoration" done by Mrs. Demy (Agnes Varda) - I saw it in the theater and it was a muddy mess, as were its various DVD incarnations (I bought 'em all). But it seems they've gone back to the drawing board - I have no idea what this is from, but it looks very much like the IB Tech prints did (I owned one). In fact, it's a miracle and anyone who loves this film should have it.

It was your first post, so it had to be approved by an administrator.

Hey Whitesheik, so there is definitely English subtitles on this, right?

Correct, and it seems the translation is better, too, although I haven't compared it directly with the older DVDs.

It's hard to take Amazon reviews of classic films seriously, when many reviewers always complain about the "dreadful" grain. Glad to hear a positive comment about this transfer, especially from someone who obviously enjoys classics.

This Blu-ray disc is Region-Free. Therefore, you will be able to play it in your PS3 or SA regardless of your geographical location. For the record, there is no problematic PAL or 1080/50i content preceding the disc's main menu.

Our review will be up later tonight.

this looks amazing!
can't say I'm familiar with this one although I have heard of the director.
any film with Catherine Deneuve is bound to be a classic right?.
does the same distributor have the rights to "umbrellas" also?
