Why does Wolfgang Petersen have to pay for a copy of his own movie on Blu? You'd think as a simple courtesy Warner would've gone ahead and given the guy a copy. Guess not.

Agreed. Warner might not be perfect, but they're releasing catalog titles at a steady pace.

Also, you're right, this wouldn't happen to Lucas....because he owns the rights to his movies not the studio (well he does for Star Wars at least, not sure about Indy). Unlike most people who just direct movies owned by the studios.
What about the constant lack of lossless sound.

Haven't they stopped this practice, except for some TV show titles?

the Region A release has DTS-HD MA... so it does have lossless.

as for TV shows, afaik, it's still all lossy.

It's funny how people keep blaming Warner for lossy sound, when this was clearly part of the early maturation processes of appealing to both HD-DVD and Blu-ray formats. In other words, this is old and outdated information. Warner has continued to release titles in lossless for awhile now.

Half of my collection consists of WB movies, and a vast majority of them are very well done transfers with lossless audio. Very pleased with WB.

Warner's early releases were hit and miss, but their later releases have been stellar for the most part. For example I watched Half-Blood Prince yesterday and the PQ and AQ were spectacular.

My biggest BD nemesis lately has been Paramount, who routinely screws up their catalog releases with excessive DNR.

The fact that Paramount wouldn't even listen to Coppola about the need for a restoration says all we need to know about their "dedication" to preserving their own films. They didn't give a damn until one of the biggest heavyweights in Hollywood got involved. THAT is truly pathetic given that the first two Godfather films are undeniable classics, arguably the two greatest American films ever made.
But you could also argue that the success of the Godfather restoration directly inspired the Sapphire Series. When Paramount has it done, it's first-rate--as proven by the Godfathers, Forrest Gump & Braveheart. (Gladiator's issues were caused by Universal, who owns its film elements and non-U.S. rights.) Problem is, Paramount doesn't have a deep catalog; the only pre-Godfather Best Picture winners they own the video rights to are Wings (last seen on VHS, though it *may* finally hit DVD & BD this year), The Greatest Show on Earth (clearly low priority), and My Fair Lady (added only recently when CBS' deal with WB expired).

WB not only has a VERY deep catalog (RKO's and most of MGM's as well as their own), but they actually release it on BD; so far, WB is the *ONLY* studio to release a pre-1970 Best Picture on BD in the U.S. (though Hamlet was released in the UK, and The Sound of Music is scheduled for this year).

And here's the kicker: If you've watched the restoration feature in the full Godfather set, notice that Paramount had Godfathers I & II restored by a subsidiary of... WB.

Don't kick WB because their product isn't always 100% perfect (i.e., most of the ones I've seen without lossless audio were released before TrueHD & DTS-HD MA became widely available); what's important is they DO believe in releasing their catalog on BD, unlike many other studios (especially Universal).

Well the bucket list and Michael Clayton were both released in 2008 and they are both lossy, and what about Goodfellas, just remastered but still lossy and they had 3 years to make it lossless, WB simply doesn't care.

My WB Titles

Very good releases:

2001
2010
300
Above the Law
Batman
Batman Begins
BeetleJuice
Blade Runner
Blazing Saddles
Creepshow
The Dark Knight
The Departed
Willy Wonka
Full Metal Jacket
I am Legend
The Matrix
The Shining
Superman (good lossy)
Terminator 3

Good PQ releases with lossy audio (older ones)
Out For Justice (lossy)
Under Siege (lossy)
Under Siege 2 (lossy)
Superman (good lossy)
Terminator 3 (good lossy)

Crappy release, but still better than DVD
Bullit

Am I missing something? I fail to see how WB is any different from any other company besides the fact that they release MORE titles than anyone else due to their larger assortment of good catalogue titles.

No kidding. WB didn't have to dump all the money they did into restoring the likes of Oz and North by Northwest, but I am grateful to them that they did!

And as I pointed out earlier, they put a higher priority on the quality of the films themselves than the likes of Fox and Sony. What good is a Blu-ray if the technical quality is great but the movie itself sucks (2012 comes to mind)? Screw that. I care a lot more about the movies themselves. WB is one of the best studios in that regard, and their Blu-ray's are pretty good IMHO.
