Talking Conan O’Brien's New Late Night Show

Quote:
If you’re jonesing for more Conan O’Brien but can’t afford to buy (or even find) tickets to his 30-city Legally Prohibited from Being Funny tour, the good news is we might not have to wait long at all for Coco to be back on TV.

According to the L.A. Times, key Fox executives, including Rupert Murdoch, are keen to sign him up for his next late night gig, and hopefully in time to announce it when the network’s fall lineup is unveiled May 17. It’s not yet a done deal, however. Some issues that remain to be hashed out are just how much it might cost, how willing affiliates would be to give up sitcom reruns to latch on to this new venture, and whether it would launch in fall or January.

If I were a betting man, however, I’d certainly put my money on this happening, and very soon. The buzz from his almost completely sold out tour should be enough to hook Fox at whatever price it takes, and certainly many people will tune in to give him the chance to soundly kick Jay Leno’s sorry ass.

Conan O’Brien has just embarked on his 30-city Legally Prohibited from Being Funny tour, but most of the shows have already sold out or are coming close to it. If you’re not lucky enough to get a ticket, filmmaker Rodman Flender (Idle Hands), is about to sign on to make a feature film that centers on it. And if you’ve got a lot of money burning a hole in your pocket or are lucky enough to get your hands on a ticket through ticketmaster, here are the tour dates:

While excited, is this actually news? Sounds like "they'll potentially announce it in May, his tour is sold out, Conan's popular."

I like Conan much better than the other hosts, but I really do not see this show doing very well in the ratings against Letterman and Leno. He should feel free to do his "material" on Fox at least, that was obviously taken away when NBC moved him to 11:35.

Agreed. If Fox is smart, they had better put him on at 12:30am.

What makes you think Conan would take that deal. If he wouldn't go on at 12:05 he's not gonna go on at 12:30 either. Hope they put him head to head with Leno.

His issue with the 12:05 slot was because it was The Tonight Show. It wont be The Tonight Show on Fox.

He says he felt the Tonight Show should be on at 11:35pm like it always has been for many years.

Putting him head to head against Leno AND Letterman would be ratings suicide. I'm sure Fox realizes this.

I was reading that fox would actually lose money by giving conan a late night show, because of how good the ratings are for reruns of the office.

Watch the New Monty Python-esque Promo for Conan O’Brien’s TBS Show by Clicking the Photo
Quote:
Finally, Conan O’Brien will once again grace our television screens this November 8th. TBS has released a new promo with clear British influences, showing the top half of O’Brien’s oversized noggin in a Monty Python-esque stop motion skit. The ginger comedian’s return to television has been highly anticipated since the Tonight Show debacle earlier this year.

In December of 2009, speculation arose that Conan O’Brien would be replaced due to low ratings only months after taking the show from Jay Leno. It was once rumored that Jerry Seinfeld might step into the late Johnny Carson’s shoes, but it quickly became apparent that NBC truly wanted Jay Leno to have his old time slot back. NBC made plans to move The Tonight Show back an hour and give Leno’s new talk show, The Jay Leno Show, O’Brien’s time slot.

O’Brien put his foot down and issued a statement saying that while he loved working on The Tonight Show, “I cannot participate in what I honestly believe is its destruction.” The red haired host signed a contract with NBC to not make a televised appearance for a three month time period after leaving the network in addition to not hosting a competing show until after September 1st. For signing, he received a $33 million severance package with $12 million going to his staff. The “Legally Prohibited from Being Funny on Television” tour was launched while O’Brien decided where he was moving as a free agent.

Eventually settling on TBS, O’Brien’s show will bring back as many of its beloved sketches as it legally can. While he did get a good amount of ratings during the battle of the late night hosts, can he pull in those same viewers with a lead in from George Lopez?

Holy crap that was ridiculously funny. I cannot wait for this show. He's been off tv for way too long. I never watch late night anymore. I think I haven't seen a single talk show since this spring or whenever he left.

I watched it without sound in my class today. I am sure the people sitting a few rows behind though I was watching gay erotica or something. I was also in danger of laughing out loud in front of my Commercial Law teacher and about 70 classmates.

Me: "So did you hear Leno's ratings have dipped lower than Conan's were?"
Dad: "Oh yeah, whatever happened to Conan?!"
Me: "New show, November on TBS, in Canada on Comedy or... CTV. On at 11pm."
Dad: "Great!"

I felt like such a marketing tool but... whatever.

I hear Max isn't returning.

There where lots of rumors flying, however here's the truth:

Quote:
Put away your conspiracy theories. Max Weinberg's unexpected departure from Conan has a perfectly reasonable—and rather worrying—explanation.

While laughter may be the best medicine, Conan O'Brien's longtime bandleader needed something a little stronger recently, revealing that he underwent "massively invasive open-heart surgery" earlier this year, a "life-changing" event that he says led to his decision to bow out of Team CoCo's latest late-night venture.

Weinberg broke the news when he was inevitably asked about the story behind his 17-year partnership with O'Brien.

"I can make a little news here, which I haven't talked about to anybody, but on Feb. 8, I came to the end of a 26-year watchful, waiting odyssey that culminated in 12 hours of massively invasive open-heart surgery," he told Fancast.

Weinberg said it was not a bypass, but instead a valve repair, and a condition he's been aware of and monitoring for a little more than a quarter century.

"As I got older, it got worse," he said. "Two years ago, it became life-threatening and I had to do something about it sooner or later. I did it two weeks after [Conan's Tonight Show] went off the air.

"I'll tell you it was a life-changing experience emotionally and spiritually. I owe my life to these doctors…I was on the heart-lung bypass machine for close to seven hours. Did it play into my decision to remain where I am [in New Jersey]? Maybe. I mean, I had three months of very difficult recovery."

And as for the Conan-Jay Leno brouhaha, Weinberg proved himself something of the understatement king, as he called the whole scenario "very weird and awkward," particularly for the 100 or so staffers who relocated along with O'Brien to Los Angeles.

"It was very dramatic," he said. "At my age, just being in this business for as long as I've been, nothing really surprises me, particularly in the landscape of television. [But] any abrupt ending to anything is shocking."

And while their mutually admiring statements upon the announcement of Weinberg's departure pretty much proved there were no hard feelings between the talk host and his one-time right-hand man (uh, after you, of course, Andy), Weinberg said he will "absolutely" be watching his old boss when Conan debuts on TBS Nov. 8.

"I hope they do wonderfully well. I'm sure they will," he said. "[Conan] is a brilliant, hard worker. I've been fortunate to have people like Bruce [Springsteen, obvs] and Conan—you don't run into guys like that very often."

I don't know about others, but I'm one of the few who missed Max (I preferred him over Andy).

I like Conan, but the 11:00pm time slot won't work for me (as it competes directly with The Daily Show). I will set the DVR to record Conan though.
