I recently visited the Sony Style store in Las Vegas and was able to demo the 3D tv they had. I noticed that the 3D glasses were quite different from those I used to watch Avatar at the theatre complex.
I also read online that the glasses to be used with the new 3D tv's will be quite expensive $300+ each. Why so expensive? and more importantly..... Why cant you use the glasses you use during theatrical releases on your 3D tv????? |

For the first question: It's probably the initial price.
Just like, you know, how Blu-ray-players and such things were much more expensive at the beginning too. The second question: Because you're not supposed to take them... lol But seriously, I don't KNOW, but my guess it's probably that it has to do with different specifications. Like, refresh-rates, perhaps the fact that it's projection compared to a TV-technology. And other things like that. Maybe also the screen-size or shape even, maybe you couldn't even use one pair of glasses at a different cinema, because of each having their own specifications. But I dare to bet more on the first thing, different technologies... Last edited by Damage Inc.; 03-19-2010 at 08:08 AM. |

I believe it's because they use different types of technologies to display a stereoscopic 3D image. Hell, even different types of 3D screens at theaters (IMAX 3D v. RealD 3D) use different types of glasses that are incompatible with each other.

The reason is the technology.
In the cinema, it utilises polarised lenses to force different images to each eye. This is not possible to do in the home without completely replacing the TV technology used in LCD screens. In the home, they use shuttered glasses, each eye flickering at 120Hz, to force an image to each eye. This latter method mean that any TV that can display at 120Hz and up has the potential to be 3D ready with a firm-ware update. It also means that the glasses will initially be supplier specific, since they will in some way need to sync with the TV to know which lens to occlude at any point. The price will drop once third-party suppliers get in on the game. |

I haven't seen the glasses used with sony or any other TVs but I know that the theaters use polarized glasses to see the stereoscopic image. TVs from what I have read use shutter glasses that need to get a signal from the TV to know which lenses needs to be open or closed to stay in snyc with the TV. I am not getting any stereoscopic TV I am wait until they have auto-stereoscopic projectors. You don't need glasses with them and they are around the corner. Probably once this technology become popular they will put out auto-stereoscopic TVs. Kind of like blu-ray and this new hdmi 1.4 spec and 1.3b and c have not even been popping up much at all yet.

As for "intercompatibility", I think it would be pretty similar to remote-controls.
The original remote-control that came with the TV would work best, as would be the case with the glasses. However, you can also get alternative remote-controls and if they support your TV they would work. It would probably the same case with 3D-glasses; I guess a brand like Logitech would be on top of it soon enough. If glasses from one TV would work with another... I think, again like with remote-controls, with a little luck they might work. But if you want to be guaranteed the best results, you should use the original devices. Unless of course alternative ones support it. Oh, and they probably want to make you buy multiple glasses for use with multiple viewers too. So that your guests couldn't just bring theirs while they have a different TV usually. I'm sure they'll want to sell as many as possible... |

They have links up for the shutter glasses which are $150/pair. Not $300 but still way to pricey IHMO
And to answer other questions. Yes if you buy a samsung tv you HAVE to buy Samsung glasses. Sony's glasses will not work. But someone posted a link in the avsforum that someone company is making glasses that will work with any tv. |

For interchangeable glasses it looks like the only early option will be the XpanD X103 and X104 the 104 will be compatable with all brands it looks like since it will have both bluetooth and IR. But is rumored to be $250 a pair. Not cheap if you need multi pairs.

$3400 is expensive (especially if the tv is 40" or smaller). However, the idea of watching Avatar in 3D in my own home makes me wanna go out and spend that $3400 right now, lol! |

Thats the biggest problem I see with the glasses being expensive. In my household I could get away with just two (for my wife and I) but what if I have more people over? Sucks as of now but i'm sure like every other electronic, the price will go down substantially within a year or less.

Its true each technology is different, Samsung 3D glasses only work with Samsung televisions, Panny's only work on Panny's and Sony's will only work on Sony televisions... Each technology is different and can not be interchanged....
