I've always been a big fan of this film and would love to see it released by Sony on Blu-ray. Anyone else agree?

Higher Learning was released in 1995 by Columbia Pictures and was directed by John Singleton. The film follows the changing lives of three incoming freshmen at the fictional Columbus University: Malik Williams (Omar Epps), a black track star who struggles with academics; Kristen Connor (Kristy Swanson), a shy and naive girl; and Remy (Michael Rapaport), a lonely and confused man seemingly out of place in his new environment. Also among the cast are Jennifer Connelly, Ice Cube, Tyra Banks, Cole Hauser, Regina King, Busta Rhymes, Adam Goldberg, Bridgette Wilson, and Lawrence Fishburne.

haha...you should have just added this to the Class Act thread. There's so many great "black" movies that deserve to go Blu it aint even funny.

I'm pissed off. Been checking for a preorder price for weeks now, and it was one of my most anticipated catalog releases in quite some time.

Me too. I emailed Sony Home Entertainment to inquire further with no response. I'm going to continue to contact them (politely) to try and persuade them to do something with the film on blu-ray (MOD, Twilight Time, etc).

But is that an Amazon-specific issue (I'm not aware of a precedent for Amaz gauging possible sales based on pres and then not stocking something if whatever threshold is not met) or is there a larger SPHE issue?

Although stranger things have happened with (alleged) releases that then didn't happen, I doubt SPHE would release artwork and a street date to e-tail and then not release something that has to have been mastered already. Pres are still up at BB and Walmart.

I emailed Sony. Their response was the following:

"We currently do not have any information about the availability of the title, Higher Learning, in Blu-Ray. Please stay tuned to*http://www.sonypictures.com/*or the website*http://www.imdb.com/*for additional information regarding upcoming Sony Pictures Home Entertainment releases."

I think we're getting into what Bill Hunt has been lamenting for at least two years now regarding the (diminished) current state of studio home vid department support/promotion/marketing/organization around packaged media. It ain't what it used to be.

I wasn't aware until just looking now that SPHE doesn't even maintain their own dedicated site anymore (unlike, say, U and Warner).

That's a ridiculous, boilerplate response from the studio. Sad but the left hand may simply not know what the right is doing, especially for a "deep" catalog title.

Maybe member/"blueshirt" tyrok will drop in and comment. The bigger tell than what a particular Amaz rep says is when/if people start seeing their pres canceled.

Pretty sure it's not cancelled. This has happened with pretty much every Sony MOD title I've bought. Robin & Marian, Casualties of War, Battle In Outer Space, were all cancelled with Amazon before they were released. Not sure what's up with Amazon, but it's happened every time.
