Default Do we mark higher than we should?

Hey guys,

I rented Snow White and Seven dwarfs last night and am I so happy I didn't buy it. What a snore fest. I realize it is very old and I also realize it is a musical animation. I love musicals and I enjoy hand drawn but I can't even get into any of the music. Do you think all the hype and high reviews for such an old movie like that is justified or are we just giving it a break because it is so old?

My review:

Movie - 2/5

PQ - 2.5/5

AQ - 3/5

Extras - N/A

Overall - 2.5/5

I think if I had bought it then I would be been very disappointed.

I read everywhere the stellar reviews and it really isn't all that great.

BTW - I would give Cars a 5.0 for Movie, AQ and PQ. I have not seen Sleeping Beauty on blu-ray but I was going to buy it this Tuesday when the Metal case comes out but Snow White scared me.

What are your thoughts?

I'm with you on Disney movies. I've never liked them. The only one I would ever watch again is Alice in Wonderland, but that's just my opinion. I'm not really interested in animation, Pixar films included.

TheZoof,

I have not yet received my of Snow White BD from Amazon (maybe today). It's probably been well over 20 years since I last saw Snow White in its entirety, yet, I know I will enjoy owning the movie.

I simply like collecting the Disney animated classics, regardless of story. Plus, my young son LOVES them, and I enjoy watching them with him.

Have you seen Sleeping Beauty on Blu-ray? I see you don't have this title in your collection. It's PQ is quite stunning for 2D-type animation. Attention to artwork detail is splendid.

That is why I am bringing this up because I saw many people say Sleeping Beauty was the best Blu last year(or close to it) and that scares me. I wanted to pick it up this Tuesday for the Wife.

You are probably closer to what modern day scores should be. I get bored to tears with these old movies animated or not.

How old are you Zoof?
Not asking as a bad thing, but it is a large factor in older movies like the Disney classics.
For many of us, these were a part of growing up and thus there is nostalgia attached which can trump some flaws.
Not only that, they are a throwback to an older way of film where movies were not pasted together to satisfy add short attention spanned audiences.

in 1937 they never heard of or thought of blu-ray, I am sure they kept that in mind as well when grading

I am 30.

I agree with you all in saying they are 'classics' but that is the point. Are we grading them because they are classics and supposed to be good? I can understand nostalgia and enjoying something from the past(I just ordered Labyrinth and that falls into that category for sure) but do you think that we rate this higher because of that?

I just wasn't blown away. I thought the drawing was poor and the dialog was weak. It just felt really out of place. I plan on getting a lot of Disney movies that I do enjoy when they come out like Dumbo(brilliant in my opinion) and Beauty and the beast(for the wife I swear LOL) but Snow white had so much buzz and I guess it wasn't for me.

Thought it would be an interesting topic to discuss.

Since a review is one man (or woman's) opinion of a movie, I'd say they don't need to be "justified" in their scores, they simply hand out what they think it deserves. Just like when we buy the movies we rate them how we think they deserved to be scored.

Regarding this specific movie, I don't like it AT ALL. I'd give it a .5/5. Yes, I said it.

Now, other Disney movies like Lion King are a different story

The Zoof,

As far as movie rating goes, it is very subjective. Citizen Kane, claimed by many as the best movie ever made, is terrible in my book. I give it 1 star. No accounting for taste.

I watched Pinnochio a week ago, deciding if I will buy the Blu, no way. Not my movie. Have Sleeping Beauty and love it, but as far as older Disney that might be it for me. Can't think of any other's I want.

PQ and AQ scores, should be scored a little more...scientifically. Not the word I'm looking for. I don't understand how they are rated, maybe they are looked at on a scale of what possibly is the best that particular film could look or sound like. Not compared to other titles out there. Some with mono tracks, like The Searchers is great, but don't think its AQ is 4 star. I'm sure most 5.1 TrueHD soundtracks that are scored at 3 are better.

I understand where you are coming from as I doubt I would enjoy some of the movies I liked when I was young (like this one), but I doubt all of the high marks for this are just because it's a classic. It is hard to know exactly why someone gives the rating they do, but one can't jump to that conclusion just because it is a classic and you don't share the same opinion. I don't agree with a lot of ratings for movies, but that's just my opinion.

I have to agree with the The Zoof here. I recently bought The Wizard Of Oz and I must say that I was bored to tears watching it. I bought it because it was a classic, not sure i'll ever watch it again though. Older doesn't always equate to being better.

I agree that reviews are subjective but what I am saying is that we are giving higher ratings to a movie like this even if we didn't like it as much as we did when we were younger? Are we giving it 4/5 just because it is a 1937 classic?

I can absolutely see where you are coming from on this. I think some stuff is graded higher just because of its reputation. I checked Snow White out the other night though and thought it looked fantastic for how old the movie is.

Like I said in my other post, I do see where you are coming from. The problem is, there is no real way to know if all of these high scores are because they really do still like it this much or if it is because they think they should because it is a classic. The latter is a possibility, but there is no way to know for sure.

Story wise I agree it is pretty boring. I mainly have been buying the old Disney classics as they come out on blu-ray since I missed them on dvd and because my daughter is 2 now and she loves them so I'm gonna get them all while they are available.

I honestly couldn't tell you because I have no desire to see it again for one reason or another.
