I saw it about a year ago and it wasnt to bad. Not some big blockbuster but very well done on the low budget that it had. The action is pretty kick A and the story is solid. hope that helps. maybe rent it first thats what i do if im unsure.

It sounds like something by that company that looks at what Disney is making this year and makes a half-asssed crapfest to get mommy to rent/buy it for their dearest

Ironically their Mulan ripoff was the first ever DTS DVD

I thought it was a good story. The scenery was amazing on dvd so I can only imagine how its going to look on BD. BUT the only problem I have is the lack of action from my point of view. There could have been a lot more. I am still gonna get it though, the scenery in BD will be to die for if the transfer is top notch

I saw it about 4 months ago. it seems like it was an adaptation of beowulf. grendel looks and acts more like a neanderthal than a troll. it was definetly low budget, but worth renting i'd say. besides, isn't this new motion capture beowulf paramount?

sadly it is paramount. whats funny is that sony is responsible for making this new one look so good yet its not gonna be on their format due to paramount.

No, Neil Gaiman's (and Roger Avary's) adaptation of Beowulf, as directed in zombie CG glory by Bob Zemeckis, will be a Paramount relea. The Beowulf & Grendel film is another title, an European production in which not everyone is CG, up to and including Gerard Buttler, yes Leonidas himself.

I'm getting this one sight unseen on Blu-ray, but only because I'm getting every Beowulf story out there. Being a Tolkien scholar and all, and Beowulf being the cornerstone of Tolkien scholarship.

Here's to the release of a Director's Cut of Eaters of the Dead on our format. (That's 13th Warrior, for those of you who prefer producer's cuts.)

Weird, I just re-watched 13'th Warrior last weekend. It's not a bad flick at all really. Wouldn't mind seeing The Messinger on Blu' come to think of it. Thanks for all your thoughts on the film, guys!

It depends on what you're looking for; I've had this on dvd for a year. It's not a CG riddled special effect fest but it's well done and the cast are no slouches. Stellan Skarsgard plays Hrothgar and Gerard Butler is Beowulf. I'd categorize the film as having amusing dialogue with incredible scenery - a keeper for me but a rental for most I'd say.

I'm getting it. As some have said, it should look awesome on BD, judging from my dvd copy.

DVD Beaver's review is up.

Guess noone teaches the fact that this is the oldest surviving poem in the English language anymore, eh? The cornerstone of the English literacy, and the primary inspiration for a multitude of writers, including Tolkien. Not, on the other hand, some newfangled fantasy story. Gary Tooze was surprised by this interpretation, which eschews the fantastical elements present in the original poem to present a "realistic" take on it, not dissimilar to the recent Troy and King Arthur.

This is going to end up on my buying list. Even though Tooze gives the video 7.5/10 because "the BRD does the things we have come to expect from high-definition although I never witnessed any unique depth to the picture quality. There were no visible artifacts even though there were some large mono-colored sky and land shots. I saw no evidence of manipulation although some of the colors (grass, sky, water etc.) looks almost too pure."

Yes, that's called untouched nature, Gary.

Default one small slip up

I have to agree with the reviewer here in that Sarah Polley's accent is completely out of place, it's not that I dislike here as an actress but there could have been some effort made to not have an American accent, it may have not been her fault but, unfortunately, it stands out, and drags you out of the movie somewhat. other than that, way better than the CG version, had a great authentic feel to it.
