Question 720p HDMI vs 1080i Component

I believe the native resolution on my Samsng DLP is 720P. Right now I am running my Blu-ray player at 1080i via Component cables. Do you think it would be worth it to run 720P over an HDMI cable besides the "upscaling" benefits? Or would I not really notice a difference?

All high definition TV's have scaler built in which will alter the resolution of video signal to suit the display. Obviously, there is a scaler in your blu-ray player as well. It all depends on which scaler produces the best result. It is hard to generalize. So I would try it both ways looking at a variety of program material. Most blu-rays are 1080p/24 native. However, some concerts are at 1080i. And your component cables are limited to 1080i. Also, have you considered using HDMI if your Samsung will accept it? HDMI cables have the benefit of keeping the signal chain in a digital form as opposed to converting it to analog to go out over component. In terms of seeing the difference, it depends on viewing distance, display quality, etc. You need to experiment.

By most accounts, people recomend HDMI over component cables.

Since I should go ahead and upgrade to an HDMI cable, would the tv look better at 720p or should I still have it set to 1080i?

That is unless you get a good pair of component cables and the source is only 1080i like most or all of Comcast Cable HD. I ran a HDMI cable from my cable box to the tv then switched to component cables and noticed no differnece in PQ. If the source is 1080i or lower I would would go with component cables. I only use my HDMI cables if the source is full 1080p. Thats just me anyway.

This is a subjective opinion, although one that I happen to share. More objective though, is that HDMI cables take up less space than the bulky component cables. All things being equal, even if the PQ difference is the same below 1080i, I'd prefer to have less wiring.

That's probably all I needed to here! Not to mention I don't want to start another war on which is better, 1080i or 720p

I would run your Blu-ray player at 720p and avoid an interlaced conversion.
