I saw that earlier and laughed. It's hilarious that DRM is the issue - DRM only stops honest people, and ironically it will just force people into downloading and bootlegs because they can't play the real thing.

We have already been talking about this today in the Avatar Release thread. It was alot worse before they corrected the article. They were saying how they couldn't get their DVD's to play and referred to them as "fancy DVD machines".

It can't be a new DRM that's the issue because all players don't need updating, only certain ones. If this were some new DRM thingy, then ALL players will need to be updated.

But if you can download, then you can update your BD player.

I agree. The problem is a lot of people (average Joe and Suzy) don't do their homework before purchase. Sites like this one are a goldmine. But, then again, it comes down to knowing where to go on the internet, and knowing what questions to ask.

I wouldn't trust the average employee at Best Buy etc. to give me the straight up about what I am looking at.

that's the biggest problem. people expect things to be like they always are when it comes to technology and that's not the case w/blu-ray.

i'm actually happy w/the firmware update tech and always having the most up to date info.

This is funny.

Not really related to the subject, but earlier this evening, a
neighbor down the street called and wanted to know if I had
a old vhs machine I could sell him because his finally bit the
dust.

It sure left me speechless.

This is why whenever anyone asks me about bluray players I say "just buy a ps3".

I don't see why everyone is laughing at the people having the problems. Not everyone is a blu-ray expert, and maybe their release of Avatar didn't come with one of those 'Update your Firmware' inserts.

What if that person doesn't know what 'firmware' is? what if they just bought it because some salesman was after a quick sale, and didn't explain the details to them?

You were all beginners at one stage remember.

I feel sorry for them, not being able to just put the disc in and play it. Not everyone has internet access.

He didnt say that The PS3 is the most reliable player on market as far as firmware. I agree, Sony does a great job with all their players keeping them current.

So a person who can steal a movie from a torrent site can't download a firmware update?

If you keep it online it requires you to push a button. That's it. It really is the best player on the market for my money. Although the other Sony players that I've used appear to be very good also.
