Default Converted Someone to PS3 - a lesson

So I convinced our neighbors, who are good friends, to go with the 80GB PS3 for X-Mas. It wasn't hard, the wife was leaning that way anyway. The selling point for her was that it had the blu-ray capability built in. She went 80GB after I explained to her that the 40GB wasn't BC... she, like myself and unlike many of you on here, thought that was a huge miss since her son has probably a hundred PS2 games.

I write this not to applaud myself for making a PS3/BD sale, but as a lesson to so many out there who pretend to understand the so-called "average consumer". Nothing is more arrogant than people who speak for the average consumer or J6P and tell us all what they will or won't buy or what they will or won't care about.

This woman is a basic soccer mom. While not having all the details, she was very aware of blu-ray and HD media in general. She was also very concerned about the PS3 being BC, a point many on this forum think doesn't matter. She was also willing to spend a fair amount of money on the system that was the most "future proof" as opposed to only the here & now.

My co-worker just bought a 80gb yesterday. I told him bout it Friday and he bought one over the weekend. He also bought Spidey 3 on BD.

This is a perfect case where the PS3 was the obvious choice.
(kid has a numerous PS2 games already, its apparent that they were not worried about the advanced audio formats playing in their expensive HT setup, etc.)

But on the flipside, the issue is that if someone is looking for the best possible PQ and SQ available today to match a really good HT system, a PS3 is not always the ideal choice.
Thing is here a lot of posters spit out that answer like reading a blu rosery without really looking at all of a buyer's needs.

It really is a good thing for Blu overall that there are players out that are a great alternative to the PS3.
Last thing we need is that we have only one choice in a great blu player.
That is one of the main issues with the other side.

Yes, but it's a software player, and this year has shown that bigger issues than that are likely to get resolved with future SW updates. That's the whole point of the PS3.

After I bought a PS3, 4 friends of mine bought one as well. So with me, I put 5 new Blu-ray players in the homes! However, only 4 of us are using it as a blu-ray player, the other still don't have a hi-def TV, so he sees no point.

LOL... are you serious? See my response here: https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...706#post324706

PS3 is still the best player out there and will continue to be my recommendation to ALL that inquire about BD.

The PS3 isn't unique in that regard. Resume isn't supported on most players (especially for BD-J discs) because there's so much state information that needs to be saved compared to DVDs. You basically need to use the Windows equivalent of hibernation for each disc you want to resume. I'm sure we'll get it at some point, but it requires a bit of extra storage.

I don't see the backward compatibility factor to PS2 games as a huge factor.....it's nice if you have PS2 games, but the work-around is to continue to use your current PS2 player......anyway....just my .02.

On that note, I'd still rather spend the extra and pick up a 60GB or 80GB.

I'm thinking this is one of those personal choice issues. If you have a bunch of PS2 games that you still want to play, then backwards compatibility is important. Personally, I mostly play sports games so a 40gb PS3 with latest sports titles is fine for me. It's cool that the choice exists. I saved $100... that's how I look at it.

Same here. I sold my PS2, but saved my PS2 games. Do you want to know how much I've played them? Zero. I'm the type of person that always needs the most current title in my sports game library so I don't think I'll ever go back and play them. I don't even need this function on my PS3.

Seems like a really gay reason to be honest. I mean it's mildly annoying but frankly I never even noticed until you just said it and I've had mine over a year.

I clearly explained the rationale of myself and our friend in my message... we don't want to have so many things hooked up to the TV. You can say it isn't a big deal, but to this person whose son has a truckload of PS2 games it was THE DEAL.... not a little deal or a big deal but the main deal. Whether the kid goes back and plays them often is irrelevant because the parent's perception was that she'd essentially be rendering those games (and her associated large $$ investment) obsolete if the PS3 weren't BC because she already knew she was putting the old machine in the closet.

These things are not always about reality, they are about perception.

As stated before, most Blu-ray players do not have Power Off/Resume on Blu-ray movies (many have it on DVDs, which the PS3 also has).

However, with newer Blu-rays (like SM3 for instance) you can set a bunch of bookmark points (or just one) before you turn off the PS3. Then when you power it back on, you can resume from that bookmark. Bookmarks are saved even with the power turned off!

I imagine the bookmark feature will become more common on titles as BD-J matures. I think other players may be able to use this feature also, if they have persistent storage (flash memory or writable disk).

Single device/integration was a big factor for me. Kids still play a few PS2 games here and there but not as much as we thought they would..but of course you only realize that *after* the purchase not in weighing your decision before the purchase.

Agree this will be the case for some people. That's why they have the 80GB . For some they will be happy to keep the PS2 around and save the $100. Why throw out something that works fine?
