Talking Looper (Joseph Gordon-Levitt)

As I've said time and time again, JGL is my favorite living actor, so I am very excited by the potential these two films can have. After Inception hits screens this summer, he's about to finally get some real long overdue recognition.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt in Talks to Join Rian Johnson’s LOOPER and David Koepp’s PREMIUM RUSH

Quote:
Joseph Gordon-Levitt is in negotiations to re-team with his Brick director Rian Johnson for the sci-hi hitman flick Looper and David Koepp’s chase movie Premium Rush. Heat Vision says “Looper is set during a future in which time travel has been invented, with operatives sent back to the present to assassinate criminals. Gordon-Levitt will play a man sent back to kill himself.” However, on his Twitter page, Johnson says that’s the exact opposite of the film. Johnson explains that, “hit men are sent their victims from crime orgs in the future.” But what does he know? He’s just the writer and director. In all seriousness, it sounds like an awesome premise and Gordon-Levitt has shown himself as one of the most reliable actors out there.

Hit the jump for details on Premium Rush, which is surprisingly not a movie about McDonald’s creating a new flavor of their tastes-like-filthy-burnt-water coffee. Gordon-Levitt will next be seen in theaters in Christopher Nolan’s “existential heist movie” Inception on July 16th.

Heat Vision also reports that Gordon-Levitt may star in Premium Rush, which probably is about a “New York bike messenger who picks up an envelope at Columbia University, only to be chased throughout the city by a dirty cop desperate to get his hands on it,” seeing as that was the logline back in November when we reported on Koepp (Ghost Town) taking the project.

I’m so happy to see Gordon-Levitt get offered these kinds of roles. The guy has shown he can do just about anything. Last year alone he was charming-as-hell in (500) Days of Summer and then he went a gleefully chewed the scenery and growled it back out as Cobra Commander in G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra. I can’t wait to see what he does in Inception and both of these roles sound good. However, between the two, I’m more excited at the prospect of Gordon-Levitt in Looper because I’d like to see him collaborate with Johnson again and the premise sounds way cooler than Premium Rush.

Me too, I own all of his obscure Indie titles and I'm always trying to introduce new fans to his work, but it'll be nice to see him in some bigger films as well, so people will rediscover "Tommy" all grown up.

I sincerly believe that JGL and Zooey Deschanel have the best chemistry in all of Hollywood. They need to be in more movies together.

And for gods sakes Sony, offer JGL the role of Peter Parker!

Toby Maguire did well in Spiderman but frankly now that it was pointed out, JGL would be stellar.

I myself am something of a complete Anti-Tobey fan in everything he does, lol, and there really isn't any movies that I can think of that wouldn't be improved by adding JGL. The rumors about him being Spider-Man however started as soon as his (500) Days of Summer director Marc Webb was cast in the reboot of SM, however they want to use an actual teenager for the role, so he's 10 years too old for that. But I think if they could use him in some other ass kicking capacity that would be great.

Now back on topic, I think Looper sounds just damn awesome and am very much looking forward to it.

Default Better Plot Synopsis for Rian Johnson's Sci-Fi Project 'Looper'

Quote:
I'm writing about another new plot synopsis today (after Inception) because Rian Johnson's Looper is a film that I am very, very excited about, but it has a complicated plot and we don't know too much about it. With that trade news the other day claiming that Joseph Gordon-Levitt was "in talks" to star in Looper, we learned that the logline THR had used was entirely wrong. So Johnson gave us the short version on Twitter. However, Cinematical (via SlashFilm) just posted a new interview with Johnson where he himself provided a much longer synopsis that definitely gives us a very good idea of what to expect (and it sounds awesome).

"Looper is a time travel movie, set in a near future where time travel doesn't exist but will be invented in a few decades. It's pretty dark in tone, much different from Bloom, and involves a group of killers (called Loopers) who work for a crime syndicate in the future. Their bosses send their targets hogtied and blindfolded back in time to the Loopers, and their job is to simply shoot them in the head and dispose of the body. So the target vanishes from the future and the Loopers dispose of a corpse that doesn't technically exist, a very clean system. Complications set in from there."

I don't know about you guys, but that just sounds frickin' awesome, especially coming from the guy behind Brick and The Brothers Bloom (two of my all-time faves). Johnson seems pretty damn excited, too, adding: "I can't wait to make it, I'm a big sci-fi fan and it's going to be a fun world to play in. Fingers crossed." As far as we know, this is his very next project and he's currently working on pre-production and getting together a cast and everything needed to make a movie. After recently seeing Primer, my mind has been numb thinking about time travel so much, and this sounds like it will be a great time travel movie.

I hope they know we don't want another origin story for spidey. Just do it the way the Hulk started.

Looper sounds awesome!

I liked Killshot and thought both him and Mickey Rourke where good. I went into it wanting to see Thomas Jane but those two stole the show.

Default Bruce Willis Joining Rian Johnson's Looper

Quote:
The last time we got news on Rian Johnson's upcoming sci-fi project Looper, Joseph Gordon-Levitt was rumored to be in talks for the lead role, but nothing was confirmed. We don't know if contracts have gotten signed and things worked out, but Deadline Hollywood is now treating Gordon-Levitt's casting as fact, and has another name to add to the cast as well.

They're reporting from Cannes that Bruce Willis has signed on to play an older version of Gordon-Levitt's character, who plays a hit men put in charge of victims sent back from the future for their executions. You'd think this system would be foolproof, of course, but the presence of an older version of the character suggests there's a visit to the future in store. Gordon-Levitt and Willis aren't exactly doppelgangers or even a convincing father and son, but I'd definitely be intrigued to see how the two might work out playing the same character. Really, anything Willis does to delay Die Hard 5 is a good decision all around.

This makes me pretty pumped for this movie.

Looper Set to Film in January
Quote:
Rian Johnson’s The Brothers Bloom was my favorite film of last year and I can’t wait to see what he’ll do with his next movie, Looper. Production Weekly tweets that the film is set to go before cameras in January. That simply won’t do. I respect Johnson taking the time to make the best film possible, but January is like five months away and that’s way too long. The sooner Johnson can make the film, the sooner I can see it, and the happier I’ll be. I don’t know why Johnson is so dead set against my happiness.

The premise of Looper is slick. It’s about hitmen in the near-future who kill people that are sent back in time from the distant-future so that the target can’t inconvenience the distant-future person who put out the contract. The film stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Bruce Willis playing the younger and older versions of the same person, respectively. I suppose it’s good to have a timetable (and it’s not a total surprise since Gordon-Levitt told Steve that he expected it to shoot early next year). But I hate the wait. I guess a double-feature of Brick and The Brothers Bloom will ease my sadness.

Bought the 10 year anniversary UHD Blu and watched it last night. I still adore this film. Cannot believe Rian went from making this amazing piece of original sci fi to the absolute disaster that TLJ is.
