Default Edge-Lit LED-LCD Vs. Regular LCD

Is there any other advantage of a Edge-Lit LED-LCD HDTV over a Regular LCD HDTV besides it uses less power?

here is a comparison that I found on the Internet that might help...

"Currently LED televisions are about 50% more than an LCD tv. However the price gap has been narrowing and will continue to do so. An LED tv uses light emitting diodes as its source of light for the television. An LED tv uses these diodes to create a much more vibrant and colorful image. The blacks are truly black (not dark gray) and the colors are more realistic vs an LCD tv. LED tvs can achieve a contrast ratio of up to 500,000:1. They also in general have a higher refresh rate which will help when watching shows with motion such as sports or movies"

As I am getting ready to upgrade my tv (hopefully this week) the real question is cheap LED vs good LCD. If I had three times the money to spend on LED it would be a no brainer. So Im going with the best LCD I can afford instead of the bottom wrung LED.

That sounds like a good choice to me. The main advantage of LED initially was that it allowed for localized dimming of the screen to produce those drastically better blacks and contrast ratios. In order to gain that advantage, however, you need a full LED backlight, not just an edge-lit one. It seems as if edge-lit LEDs don't offer much on top of LCD technology--perhaps a marginal benefit in color reproduction. I read an article recently at Home Theater Review magazine that reviewed one of the edge-lit LEDs. I'll post a link if I can find the article.

Good luck with your decision, whatever it is!

Got it. A quick read worth looking over.

Aren't LED back-lit LCD sets the only ones that produce absolute blacks whereas LED edge-lit LCD sets can only produce a dark grey (albeit darker than that of regular LCD sets)?

My edge-lit produces an extremely black black. Is it an "absolute" black?? Possibly only a meter can tell me that and if that is what it takes to detect an "absolute" then who cares.

I was simply asking a question. No need to get so defensive.

Not defensive one bit. I was simply answering a question. No need to read into an answer what was not there and what was not there was defensiveness.

Your response came across as defensive because of the double question marks and the "if that is what it takes to detect an "absolute" then who cares" comment at the end. It may not have been your intent but it's what was projected by your wording and punctuation.

My " " around absolute is because everyone seems to be looking for the "absolute" black (what ever that is?) and what I was saying about it is: if it takes a meter to find the differences in blacks between quality TVs then ones eyes would probably never see it. And then "who cares?" meaning me and my TV.

Defensive? Not at all but I do feel you are reading into what is not there. Relax and enjoy life.

We are looking at an LED TV over one having a CCFL backlight for 2011. Has anyone done a side-by-side comparison (both sets on at the same time) of edge-lit over local dimming and saw a meaningful difference between the two. I think black level is getting so good here, the law of diminishing returns is starting to kick in and the new look is going to win out over function.

The other posts here seem to indicate there is not much difference, though sites such as cnet note "poor uniformity and backlight fluctuations" with edge-lit sets.

Back to Power Consumption

As I said, it may not be your intent but it's what came across. Especially with punctuation such as "??". With this being the internet and not a face-to-face conversation, I'm sure you can understand my mistake.

Short version: I'm sorry I misunderstood and misjudged you.
