Default PS3- Restrictions on Menu

I will be getting either the PS3 or a blue-ray player sony or samsung. My question is I am afraid if I go to PS3 my menu options will be restricted. Do I lose any menu options or would it be just like a regular blue-ray player as far as menu options? Is it hard to use the menu or is their a remote.

You don't lose any options. The PS3 doesn't include a remote, but sony makes a blue tooth remote for the PS3.

Also, it's Blu-ray, not Blue-ray.

When i first heard of blu-ray, and saw the initials bd, I always wondered by they didn't just called them br's. Then I realized blu-ray is one word and BD stands for Blu-ray Discs hehe. Ah, I was such a noobie back then.

If you aren't planning to game, then I'd go with a player -- the PS3 doesn't work with universal remotes since it's all bluetooth, and though you don't lose any menu functions/features (to the best of my knowledge) it is a little clunkier to control stuff like a-b replay etc (it pulls up a clumsy options menu like the PS2 DVD controls -- though all common functions are on the inexpensive and generally excellent PS3 remote [edit: not included with the PS3, but I think it's just $25)] ).

Regardless, either way you go you will get a great blu-ray experience!

I'd still get a PS3, hands down. The PS3 is profile 1.1 AND 2.0 compatible, it has dramatically quicker load times, AND it can do all sorts of other things (internet access, media center, games) if you so decide to use that at a later date. Also, re-sale value would be much higher.

If you do go with the PS3, you can set it to "auto play" when you insert a disc, and this way it will function closer to a standard player and less like a game console when you use it for movies (not that I mind, but until I set it to auto play my wife disliked using it for movies since she had to navigate the main PS3 menu first, and it felt clumsy to her -- oh, and she loves our Harmony universal remote and is annoyed we can't use it for the PS3, though I may try to rig up an IR receiver to a PS2 --> PS3 controller adapter).

Personally I am holding out for a player that can decode DTS-HDMA internally and output 7.1 analog, but that's just because of my setup and lack of $$ for a new receiver.

You touched on the only potential downside I can think of with the PS3. Some people won't like not being able to use their universal remote on the PS3... it's unfortunate when better technology (blue tooth) stops you from doing something so simple.
