I hope someone can clarify this for me regarding PS3's wifi capabilities.
I was under the impression that when Sony touted the PS3 has having "built-in wi fi capability," it meant that everything that I would need for the PS3 to be a wifi machine was...you know.... built in! I thought that as long as the PS3 was connected to internet (which mine is through comcast) that it would have the ability to allow my PSP to get online via the "built in" wifi capability of my PS3. Well it seems that this is not the case as I have had no luck in getting an internet connection through my PSP. I thought it would be the same basic idea as when you go to other WiFi hotspots like Starbucks or Panera Bread and get connected. Now I am completely confused! Can someone here please explain to me in lamen's terms what Sony ACTUALLY means when they say "built in?" Also, how does this affect the new functions of the PS3/PSP with the 2.00 update? |

Built in Wi-fi means that the PS3 has a built in receiver that allows you to access a wireless network that you have set up. Built in means that the wi-fi module is internal and does not require you to purchase an add-on device in order to connect to the internet wirelessly.
The PS3/PSP functions basically allow you to access information on your PS3 and use on your PSP via an online connection. |

However, to access the PS3 while abroad, you WILL need a wifi access point wherever you are located. |

i can tell you that before firmware 2.0 you needed your ps3 on and in remote play and hooked up to the internet via a wireless connection. you also needed you psp connected to a wireless connection. then, you could access your ps3 via your psp. if you havn't you need to sync your psp with your ps3 too.

So let me get this straight. You are saying that if for instance I want to access my PS3 from 15 miles away I have to A.) Have a wireless router connected to my PS3 and B.) Be near a wifi access point? How much do the routers generally cost? |

You know honestly, while this seems like a cool thing that can be done with the PS3/PSP, I don't see any real practical use I would have for it other than just to say "hey look what I can do!" If I were able to access my PS3 from ANY location without having to be near a hot spot, I might see an advantage like if I were on the road or at a buddie's house. However if I'm going to have go out of my way to drive to a hot spot, what's the friggin point?

And to verify again, to access your PS3 from abroad, you do NOT need a wireless router at home, the only requirement is that the PS3 is connected to the internet. However, if you bought a wireless router, it definitely would extend your range around your house for using the PSP to access the PS3 http://www.amazon.com/Linksys-WRT54G...4536118&sr=8-1 that's a wireless b/g router for $50, but there are SO many other options, hehe. |

Actually, let's do it this way:
http://manuals.playstation.net/docum...ork/index.html All the information is there: -Using remote play (via the wireless LAN feature of the PS3™ system) -Using remote play (via an access point) -Using remote play (via the Internet) -Remote play menu And gives you directions on how to set it up. |

If you have the Eye you could check in on things at home or use the video chat ..well at least to see other people..you'd be freaking them out as they wondered why you aren't showing up on your camera. ![]() The hotspot focus to me does distract from the bigger picture that it's any access point.. Btw some cities are turning the entire city into a wi-fi "hotspot" ..not just a particular point like Starbucks. |

Now that would be fantastic! However I don't see that happening where I live anytime soon! I live in a mid-major city (Chattanooga) and I don't see us getting that anytime soon. We didn't get broadband or high def channels until about 2 years after it had already been in most major cities.
