Here is a quote. "Meanwhile Warner has informed me that the studio is commited to catching up with there Blu-ray disc releases in 07, so that all previously released hd dvd titles will be available on Blu-ray as well, and future titles will be available on both formats simultaneously" Thats great....now give us PCM audio on these titles ![]() |

Warner actually said this many months ago in a public announcement....so there should be no big shock for anyone except the hd dvd zealots. |

That's very positive news.
Wow, even without that I was expecting to see BD pull away from HD DVD in the title counts by the end of Q1-2007. If Warner is going to be accelerating BD releases to catch up, then that will cause that much more of a gap. Gary |

This is my take on the announcement:
Warner must have realised that if VC-1 is to be the saviour of HD DVD, then the software royalties from each unit sold will not actually go into their pocket, it will instead go to MS. Seen as they are a major part of the MPEG-LA they will make more royalties from using MPEG2/4 and the BDA have made their intentions quite clear about VC-1. It may end-up that the major studios will eventually all realise that they will be losing money big time to MS if they keep on with VC-1 and they abandon HD-DVD. A bit of backround now - most of the money that studios make from DVD releases is the royalties that have to be paid on all releases to the MPEG-LA, the physical disc royalty is much lower than the MPEG royalty. Sony foresaw that they would lose big time if they did not have their own implementation of MPEG4-part10 so they helped make AVC with all the other major MPEG2 contributors - note this is without MS (without any real involvement anyway). People accusing Sony of being backwards really have no idea what they are talking about as it was them that initiated real investment into AVC as they saw WM9-VC1 as a threat to a major income source. But I digress, the money-men at Warner seem to have forecasted that if HD DVD wins out that they will make less money on each disc sold than if BD wins out, I know this is a lot to read into one announcement, but Warner were only sticking to HD DVD because of the legacy issues, and now that AVC (read MPEG-LA which Warner are a member in) is basically out of the picture for HD DVD; Warner may have had to recalculate their earnings from royalties, while they make more from the physical HD-DVD that is sold, they will lose on the software side, and that is what this whole war is about, MS and Toshiba trying to take what is not rightfully theirs, Toshiba did it with DVD, and now MS want in. I hope once they have completed the catch up, they do day and date releases for both formats, or the BDA pressurises them into adding PCM tracks. I think the latter is more likely now that they have announced their intention to speed up their BD support. Last edited by Maximus; 12-10-2006 at 01:51 AM. Reason: Ease of reading, grammar. |

I hope this means Warner got their issues with IME on BD taken care of so we can get the movies we all have been waiting for. BDs title count is going to skyrocket soon. Look at all of the releases that are coming in January and February alone. Fox is really putting its weight behind BD and Sony is stepping up their releases once againg. 2007 is looking to be a great year, all we need is Universal.

Theres also talk that HP was delayed in the U.S. on hd dvd...so that it could be released on BD at the same time.
This is based on it being released already in another region on hd dvd...and is probably just speculation. Although I have no interest in HP movies.....a lot of others do. There are at least three unreleased Warner titles I would like on BD....but I hope they at least use PCM audio if there 50gb. |

The only problem I foresee with Warner catching up to BD is... the $bling$. Honestly, you guys need a second income or be pimped out to get all new BDs in the future!

Absolutely right about that. I wish they had a trade-up program for their standard DVD releases...like $5 towards the purcahse of the BD edition. That would be cool. Oh, well. Guess I can always trade im in at EB Games/Gamestop.

Ha ha..I think Bill Hunt took down his own post. I guess he either jumped the gun, or the HD-DVD zealots were threatening him over the posts.
