It's probably a legal requirement as Freeview doesn't have to serve the Channel Islands.

Even though you can get Freeview there, it could stop one day and HMV are warning people it might not work in that case.

Thanks. Digital TV will only be broadcast in MPEG 4 format once it goes live so just wanted to see if the PlayTV tuner would work!

Default PlayTV Down Under?

Does any fellow Aussies have any idea on when this is coming to Australia? I've seriously wanting to replace this crappy TEAC set top box (my parents bought, I didn't make the mistake )

I've overheard the reasoning behind why PlayTV hasn't come here is due to one TV station (SBS) is broadcasting on a different frequency or something which is incompatible with the PlayTV device.

But otherwise, has their been any other word on this situation?

Default Major PlayTV Update Due Towards The End of 2010

Major PlayTV Update Due Towards The End of 2010
Quote:
Hi, Just wanted to let you know that the guys at Cambridge studios are working really hard to develop some great new features for PlayTV. The next update for PlayTV is due later this year but testing of some of the new features has already begun.

I don’t want to give too much away and spoil the surprise but a little hint to one of the new features is that PlayTV will have links to the worlds most popular social network site, Facebook. Other great enhancements to PlayTV and brand new features will also be included in the update.

As soon as these exciting new features are ready for you I’ll give you all the details here on the blog.

Hope you are enjoying your PlayTV on your PS3. If you have any questions or comments, feel free to add them and I’ll be back on here on Monday to answer as many as I can.

I look forward to getting this update to you later in the year.
Hopefully they're working on upgraded hardware too.

Mark Green: Well, as a whole studio, I think you saw TV Superstars for Move announced a little while ago. We're still working on Play TV, Play TV 2. And then we have other guys working on other concepts...
PlayTV 2 aye? Does sound like they could be updating the hardware too!

From CNET June 1st:

"Sony is working on a follow-up to its PlayStation 3 DVR known as PlayTV, senior producer Mark Green confirmed in a recent interview with game publication Spong.

According to Green, his studio is working on several projects. He balked at mentioning them all but cited the DVR add-on unit for the PS3.

"We're still working on PlayTV, PlayTV 2," he said.

Green stopped short of discussing it further. Regardless, speculation abounds over what may come out of the PlayTV 2. The first PlayTV, which went on sale in 2008 for about $156, allows owners to record and play television programming. PlayTV was initially made available only in Europe. It has not come to the United States, but that doesn't necessarily mean that PlayTV 2 won't show up here.

Back in April, Sony mentioned an update to PlayTV. It did not mention PlayTV 2 by name but said the DVR update would include Facebook integration.

Sony did not immediately responded to request for comment."

I think play tv 2 will just be the HD version. Since freeview is going HD about now in all parts of the UK using the DVB-T2 standard. I would be very very surprised if DVB-T2 was not part of the spec.

I doubt play tv 2 will come out in the USA. Nothing has changed since the first one. The only feasible way to get play tv to work in the states is through the internet.

Would be nice if new PlayTV software integrated with the XMB like the optional Photo Album app. Just a few seconds to start up.

I rang my local gamestop to find out if they are stocking this at the moment (FreeView TV has finally launched in Ireland) but they said they havent stocked it in a while because PlayTV/Playstation are bringing out something new shortly.

Anyone know anything about this?

I can buy it online, but dont want to drop the cash if something new is on the horizon

First I've heard of an upcoming update.

I'm sure there's a lot of software features and box styling they could take from torne.

Nice! So essentially that is just PlayTV, but for Japan.

Might go ahead and pick up PlayTV so!

Even with an HD broadcast, there should be PS3 performance to spare to Remote Play encode a much higher quality stream to PS Vita.
