I was watching the rat movie Tuesday and it came out through my toslink cable as a DD 5.1 soundtrack. Thursaday night after I had updated to 2.0 I watched the movie again and it came out as a 6.1 soundtrack and I believe it was DTS. I was surprised at the time but had to be away from home till today and plan to try some different movies to see what I get.

OK it was a DD 6.1 track according to my DENON display and I get the same from Cars. I tried Sahara that had a disapointing DD 5.1 mix when we first watched and it was much better but stll only 5.1. I will try more titles this PM.

Well, by CD I meant Compact Disc, not Digital Versatile Disc. I hadn't really considered DVD audio, besides the internet such disc are very rare in the UK. (Seems we're last to get everything and usually pay the most for it when we do)

As far as your damaged hearing goes, you might wanna change your habit a bit and see a doctor about that. I can't imagine being deaf through habit is much fun.
Probably, then again, some people like paintballing. Not me. I'm a bit of a ***** I guess. Anyways my hearing shouldn't be too bad, I'm only 24.

Hopefully your brother has a Denon that accepts HDMI multichannel sound. Then your comparison will work. If you don't have SACDs, BDs with PCM/TrueHD will work against Dolby Digital.
All I know is he paid of £1000 for it and short of cooking him breakfast in bed, if does everything.

Hopefully one day I'll upgrade myself. I'm not really an audiophile as it were, and I've only just worked my way into the 5.1 world with a budget AVR. As you can see from my signature, my equipment and collection, currently leaves something to be desired. One day though. Its a good work around for now, I need to upgrade my speakers before I do anything else. I'm using two from a Sony stereo (which sound awesome) and two off an old Aiwa stereo which sound really pants (UK pants (= US underpants)... bit like US fanny = butt, UK fanny = Holy Grail).

What was I on about again?

Thanks for the information on the conversion... my missus won't appreciate it though, because you've set me off wanting again. Don't complain if she comes after you!

I just wish they would allow for you to be able to listen to a SACD and surf the web at the same time. That's what stops me from enjoying it as much.

I only have DSOM, Thriller, Diana Krall: The Girl in the Other Room, and Monty Alexander: Stir It Up (The Music of Bob Marley). I bought the last one by accident. I thought it was Bob Marley.

aren't they a subscription service? that's why I shyed away from them. I saw they had them for $6.99 but what's the subscription fee?

edit: ok so if i had signed up for yourmusic.com i would have saved about $7 including the monthly fee of $6.99. so i'm not too broken up about it. i'm spending to much on bds to afford buying to many sacds anyway. and i get my cds either used or from my friends at the radio station.

Yes, they are a subscription service, but the difference is they only send you discs that you choose. You keep them in a Netflix-like queue. There's no minimum purchase, and no limit. You can even send them as gifts.

arnie,

You were exactly right. I put in the SACD and choose the 5.1 channel mix and the PS3 converted it to Dolby Digital and it sounds really good.

(Don't have a good way to compare A/B with my other player.)

I'm definitely happy! If my SACD player dies now it's less of a problem. And my PS3 takes another step to being the only source I need for everything. It's like the swiss army knife of Home Theater!

Where do I find a PS3 SACD version? Is there a way to distinguish these units form the non-SACD units??

Thanks

It's only the 40GB version that doesn't have it.

Just to clarify
The PS3 displays the logos of all built in technology on the top (when stood vertically). The one you're looking for is the

SA
CD

distorted into a funny circle shape... (can't say its my favourite logo in the world). It sits between the DVD and CD logos. If your PS3 has the logo, it can play it. 40GB PS3's only have two USB ports. But I assume you will know what you've got/are buying.

I called CC and BB and JR music world in NYC. None of the sales reps new about SACD, much less that the PS3 even offered that format.

SACD has been around for a while now and since it was not the success that it was hoped to be (mainly due to music labels not supporting it enough), not many people knew about it. Google SACD if you want to find out more.

Get the new HDMI receiver anyway. Then you can enjoy SACD in lossless quality as well as BD in Dolby TrueHD, DTS HDMA and PCM multichannel.

Here's the logo.

Dude this is huge, I love you. Why the **** isn't Sony shouting this from the rooftops? Could stimulate some interest in the SACD format.
