Default Writing a paper about the format war...

Hello everyone. I'm writing a paper about the format war for my Economics class.

I was wondering if any of you could help by posting some links about recent topics or news articles.

I've searched and found a few but any help would be greatly appreciated.

On a side note it's kind of hard to write this paper as I'm a bit Blu biased

Keep in mind that the supposedly "neutral" commentary at HighDefDigest has a decidedly red slant. This occurs elsewhere as well.

In hidefdigest make sure to use the graphs from amazon. Show the class how much blu ray is kicking butt over hd dvd.

What type of economics?
Are you focusing on the economic stability of the competing formats?
Are you trying to predict a likely victor based upon economic game theory?
Are you looking into the economics of a format war?

One thing i might suggest is making it about the adoption of new formats by your local community, be that college students, city residents, etc. and the value that those idividuals put on new and emerging technologies. i.e. some people will pay more for something because it is new and advanced, while others will wait it out until the price is competitive with the previous technology because they personally gain nothing from the new advancements. The economics of early adopters vs. the wait-and-see'ers.

It's its antitrust economics so this paper is about regulation. Should the government file any antitrust violations for certain actions, reducing production, etc.

you'll have to talk about the disinformation and fanboyism of some peopne that is part of the "war" and can influence some people that read it to go in a camp or the other

If the subject is regulation it would seem relevant to ask about the possible regulatory consequences of one side making payments to people to post on internet forums in favor of the side making the payments or of making payments to journalists to write articles purporting to be neutral but in reality slanted in favor of the side making the payments. There is a widely held belief that such payments have been made in this format war.

Just a little update on my paper.

So I actually ended up learning alot about technological standards.

I see how Toshiba tried to use VHS' approach and hit the market with low cost players while Sony on the other hand is trying to achieve a large consumer base.

By using a consumer base they are using an "indirect network" that pushes software sales. I could go on about this topic but maybe I'll post my paper once I've finished.

Here's a good essay I read that really helped me out
