Of course I've used knoppix which should be just fine for what you're looking for and probably a more simple implementation. I'm just used to the security distros because of my job.

I just wanted to add that 2.5" SATA drives have the exact same connectors as a 3.5" one so there is no need for an external case or SATA-to-USB adaptor if the computer has SATA.

alright, I skimmed through this post and the answer I am looking for may be in there but I am just to tired to go through everything...

my question is...

when you hook up an external HDD to the PS3, does this wipe out what you have stored in the PS3?....or is this just for when you install the HDD on the left side of the PS3?....

I'd like to get an external HDD...but if it wipes everything out then it's not even worth my time...

An external drive does NOT erase the internal drive... I can not recommend enough that you BACK UP YOUR INTERNAL DRIVE using an external drive. The only issue is that you need to format the external drive to fat32 before you hook it up... winxp will NOT format a large drive to fat32, but you can use google to find a freeware program to do it.

When I upgraded the PS3 to 250 gig, I furst used an external drive to back up the internal drive, and after swapping the drive, I used the backup set to restore everything from the 60gb drive to the 250gb drive... I did the swap, and didn't lose anything

this is no good, XP doesnt recognize the HDD, even tho the software called "Recover my Files" does and was looking for files, however, no files were found. So there must be something wrong with the format here, and maybe something wrong with the Software as well, any other recovery software suggestions, guys?

thanks!

so we came to a conclusoin, after the formation, the format's been changed to something that neither XP nor Linux can recognize.

And we're tryin to find a software can actually recognize the HDD,if only the HDD can be found then the rest would be easier from there.

anybody?

thanks!

u dont understand, he got a new HDD and was goin to xfer the data on the old 60G to a external HDD, however, he wanted to format that external HDD frist thru PS3, and the system doesn't make it clear which HDD it's goin to format and he thought it might for the external one, and he pressed OK, so that's that!!!!

the problem is SONY should make it clear to the users that which HDD the PS3 is goin to format, not just simply saying "format Hard Disk".

anywayz, does anyone know the format of the HDD, cuz it is not FAT32 nor NFTS since none of the software can find anything on the HDD nor the computer would recognize it.

Sorry but I think your <wink, wink> "friend" is not very bright to "accidently" format his (yeah right) PS3 drive.

I don't see how you can "accidently" keep blowing through prompts leading to doom.

lol, i am sure he is very bright, i dont wanna say if he is 100 times smarter than u, since he makes about at least 100 times more than u make a yr. (that's if u make about CAN$ 80,000 - 120,000 a yr)

of course i am not sayin that rich ppl r normally smarter, but.... since u wanna judge others, maybe it's time for urself have a little self examination or i can do that for u. wink wink!

Fortunately money does not make you smarter. Good genes and real brains trump $ everday of the week in the smarts category.

And suffice to say, I have never "accidently", wait, I have never had a "friend" re-format a hard drive when he (yeah right) didn't want to.

But get on with your bad self anyway.

p.s.

Living in coastal Orange County, CA isn't exactly poor mans country. We do well for ourselves thank you very much.

well if u wanna turn this to a something freak show i have no problem with it.

dude do u know how much the properites r here in Vancovuer? LA is nothing compare to us, it's the world probably no2 next ShangHai at this moment, average in his area which is Britih Property in West Vancouver cost around 5 million start. and my area Shaughnessy is about 7 million, so really, save it.

and again, he did it, he accidently did it, not cuz he is stupid, and really this doesnt make a person smart or not, just like i said being rich doesnt make someone smart. He is pretty pissed now about the pics he has and that's all, he is busy and never interested in posting or joinin any kinda or sites or forums, so what is wrong with me postin here and ask for help?

now u make me feel sad for u, see i have time to post here cuz i make a lot of money so i have the time and luxury, what about u having all this free time to post threads to attack others and make ppl feel bad about something awful they accidently did? get a life, if u can help input, otherwise, Piss off.

thank u

i know... he asked me to get a white PS3 from Japan, so... i'll see about that, i'm goin to Tokyo very soon, and, he also likes to have an ice blue PSP, he doesnt even play them, just like buying stuff i guess, kinda like me, bought a lot, rarely use.

being "ChEAp" is not a bad thing, i think ppl r stupid if claerly know someone is selling the same for a lot less, yet ingore it just cuz they have money.
