Ok, hold back the venom and keep reading. My intention here is to prove they should in fact be counted as players. This should shut up the FUDers and rabbid red campers once and for all. No offense to our neutral buddies.
Example: Most of know you can make a Video CD (VCD), pop it in a compatible DVD player, and watch video off a CD. Ok, Cool. ![]() Now, pop that same VCD into your music cd player. What happens? It's a CD, right? This thing plays CD's, correct? Yes on both accounts. The difference is it is a dedicated music player only. Therefore, it can not count as a VCD player. Let alone a DVD player. Now, take a blu-ray movie and pop it in your favorite standalone blu-ray player. No miracle here, it plays. Pop that same BD into a PS3 and, wow, it still plays. Why? Because IT IS a blu-ray player - not just game machine. If it were an exclusive gaming device, then PS3 blu-ray would only read data file formats. But it is not exclusive to reading just data files, it plays BD movies. Therefore it is countable as a blu-ray player. Albeit, a hybrid one. The only high definition player which do NOT count as a blu-ray player is HD DVD. Case closed! ![]() Last edited by tron3; 11-16-2007 at 03:39 PM. |

wow, stretch of logic IMO. the ps3 is a blu ray player. what i think you are trying to stretch this to is attach rates, players sold, etc. in which case, it is impossible to discount the ps3 as a viable home theater player and impossible to count every ps3 as a blu player sale. i don't know how many 8 yr olds that the system was purchased for (lucky 8 yr old) who goes and uses it for movies as well. or, how many 40 yr olds purchased it for movies and not games. the thing is, we don't know and it is near impossible to know. as you even state, the ps3 is a hybrid machine.
so yes, the ps3 is a blu-ray player. everyone with half a brain knows the ps3 plays movies. however, we can't count all ps3's as active players because we don't know who all is using them as a player. they can only be counted as potential players. ok, i'm at work and keep getting interrupted so not sure how much sense the post makes. hopefully, it is somewhat coherent |

![]() Hey, if they want to split the results an say "X number of players sold", and "Y number of potential players sold." It's ok. Any idiot can still add them up to a total of "Z" sold. |

see, anyone forcing me to answer surveys to turn some stupid card in is just not getting my card. simple as that. it's not that i have anything against it, but i don't volunteer myself to do a survey most of the time.
the best thing i see is them running a poll on the psn network. you can only access it if running from a ps3, blah blah blah. |

well, simplified a poll that said what do u use ur ps3 for... movies, games, both
two of those answers will count the player as a blu player (of course, that doesn't quite work because of DVD's, streaming, etc)... like i said simplified but u get the idea |

I think PS3's should only count when discussing attach rates, but they shouldn't count when talking about total number of players.
![]() EDIT: hey you beat me to it w_tanoto |

Why should it count for attach rates? That would make it look like no one is buying movies for their players...
