Default Warner's 'Alexander' is coming to Blu-ray

'Alexander' Cut Coming to HD-DVD, Blu-ray in 2007
December 18, 2006

Warner Home Video has announced 'Alexander Revisited: The Unrated Final Cut' will be available on DVD February 27, with both HD-DVD and Blu-ray versions following sometime later in the year.

The new cut adds 45 minutes of filler and explicit material to the theatrical version. Jeffrey Baker, Warner senior VP and general manager of theatrical catalog, commented to VideoBusiness.com, "Most director’s cuts and special editions are typically two to 10 minutes longer, and here we have [an extra] 45 minutes. Oliver really wanted to show the viewer what these battle scenes were really like, and the extended scenes of the battles give you the realism and sheer horror of them. There are [also] salacious scenes, heterosexual and homosexual, which tell quite a different version of the story than what we saw in theaters."

I have not seen it but I am all for director's cuts rather than MPAA 'lowest common denominator' cuts of movies.

Well, I'm glad its getting released, but I'll have to pass on this one. Alexander was already slow and long enough to begin with. This movie in my opinion was first rate awful. Didn't like it one bit. Just my 2 cents.

Not very highly regarded over at IMDB. I'll be skipping this one.

Yeah, from what I understand a lot of that was cut from the last "Director's Cut" of this, but who knows what this version will bring. You also get Rosario Dawson nakedness

I was really looking forward to this movie as I love this type of genre. What a letdown, I found the dvd picture quality all over the map and the Leto/Farrell eye-humpathon just creeped me out. I could barely stand Leto in Lord of War just because of Alexander. Rosario Dawson was a definite highlight and for me if the BD "HAS" to be more explicit I hoping it's more of her...

Meeh.. Not too exciting. I didn't like the movie. Rather weird, choppy storyline and so on...

Well one this is going to be interesting here, the movie will be released on both formats! The original movie was 175 min and this cut is 45 min longer and a 120 min movie in descent bit rate and Warners favorite VC1 codec is usually around 22Gb video/audio. In releases like these you need bigger discs than 30Gb, Warner will have to chop it up or lower the bit rate. The same thing is going to have to be applied to Lord of the Rings extended edition and so on.

in honesty, i liked the DVD extended edition. i prob won't buy this until i hear how the more extended parts are, but we'll see. i think the big part was people really don't understand what the time period and acceptable behavior was at that time (and we may not truly know now). however, i found it very fitting for my knowledge of ancient life. also, oliver stone likes to make things as real and as true to life as he can and this certainly did the job.

Thing about the Director's Cut DVD is that its actually shorter than the theatrical cut

So real and so true, you had Macedonians speaking Irish...and a director copying a scene from Braveheart practically.

That's homos to you! *threesnapsandacosmo* And I think that's Caligula, which is a bigger mess of a movie.

I think the reason they (the studio) cut the gay scenes was to sell the idea that Alexander was a straight heroic leader, even though historically that is not the truth. Neither was Richard the Lionheart.

This is another attempt by Warner to salvage this title. The "director's cut" was the first in ANY optical disc formats: it's shorter than the theatrical! This one will be 45 minutes longer and could be why Stone got so many talented people to work on it.

sorry but i just have to chime in here. true to life?? are you kidding me??? he had some lame British historian providing his pathetic interpretation of what may have been actual documented scripts from the time. Just because something says he was very close with a friend it doesn't mean he was GAY!!!! I can see how a direct translation of this in Greek may come off as gay to someone who doesn't know Greek (and someone raised in our generation's way of thinking), but it's far from the truth. Sure many things were more acceptable at that time and I'm sure a lot of bisexual things happened in those times, but to make him look obviously that flaming is just plain inaccurate. The Greeks wrote this movie off and went so far as to sue the creators to try and have it marked as a fictional story at the beginning. Anyway, I could go on about this for a while but the conclusion is it is NOT accurate in many ways (not just the gay part), is poorly presented (and yeah i agree with the comment about Irish accents, lol), and there were much more interesting parts of Alexander's conquests they could have focused on but left out. Major letdown of a movie and a waste of a bluray title.

my 2 cents.

I interpreted some of Oliver Stone's comments on the commentary as meaning that Alexander and Hephaestian weren't in fact gay, but simply very close.

Sure the word love is used to describe their relationship but there are many different kinds of love such as brotherly love and familial love, to say nothing of comradeship.
