Quote:
Do you buy The Office's Rainn Wilson not just hooking up with but also marrying Liv Tyler Well, don't worry, because even though that's how the trailer for Super starts off, it doesn't take long for her to dump his sorry ass for a smarmy high-level drug dealer played by Kevin Bacon. So he naturally makes a superhero costume for himself and decides to fight crime.

Written and directed by James Gunn (Slither), Super is a dark comedy that takes the basic set-up of Kick-Ass -- a regular guy puts on a superhero mask -- but appears to maintain a more grounded, albeit humorous approach. Nathan Fillion (Firefly), Ellen Page (Inception) and Michael Rooker (Slither) also star. And the whole gang was present in Hall H at Comic-Con today to show off footage from the film.

The trailer reveals the set-up involving the failed marriage, and how Wilson designs a homemade super costume -- all red and flannel-looking -- and teams with a psycho kid sidekick in the person of Page (who once played a different superhero, of course, named Kitty Pryde). But when Wilson stages a home invasion of Bacon's place, the bad guys guards start shooting -- so what can a guy in red pajamas do but run in such a case?

A full scene from the film was also screened for the crowd. Wilson is on line at a movie theater when he sees a scumbag-type cutting the line. He approaches the guy and tells him, ?You go to the back of the line now. The guy responds, Go f#@k yourself. So an enraged Wilson heads over to his car to put on his superhero costume, where we see him through the back windshield in his tighty-whities struggling to get into the thing. He then marches back to the theater and smashes the scumbag in the head with his wrench -- and then smacks the guy's girlfriend with it too -- surely killing or at least seriously maiming them. He then makes a run for it.

As the scene ended and the lights came up, Gunn laughed that he was like, ?Rainn, you can?t hit the girl with the wrench.? And Rainn responded, ?This is my thing, man!?

The script was first written eight years ago, at the same time that Slither was in the works. Gunn actually had financing for it, but he couldn?t find the right actor for the role -- someone who can do comedy and drama, but also be dweebie enough to be picked on and yet weirdly unsettling enough to hit people with a wrench.

Additionally, we can look forward to a love scene between Wilson and Page that is gruesome and mostly icky. And of course, Fillion -- who plays the Holy Avenger in the film, an ambiguously gay superhero -- stole the show today with his wisecracks and antics (not to mention his Justice League T-shirt). Also, Rob Zombie provided a song for the soundtrack and provides the voice of God himself in the film.

Super is another lower-budgeted effort to show up in Hall H today as opposed to the huge studio films that typically appear here. And make no mistake -- Gunn said it was an exceptionally hellish movie to make. So, the opposite of super, eh?
Sounds like "you know what" just way darker!

What's with all these none-super superheroes movies these days?

well it does say it was written 8 years ago, so it was before a huge trend started.

I suppose so but how good can it truly be if they needed a trend to have the movie done

Well it depends, this sounds brutal, so I don't think it a case of quality but if it's mainstream enough, I'm interested, but wary.

It make's me believe that maybe this is someone growing up reading Watchmen and came up with a story of his own, sort of like influence by his love for Watchmen.

With Nathan Fillion and Ellen Page in it, it has my interest. As far as it taking 8 years to be made, even some really good scripts have sat around for a while before they got made. I'm not saying this is one of those for sure of course, but I'll wait and see. Maybe it will at least be entertaining.

Default James Gunn's Super

Super is an upcoming super hero movie starring Rainn Wilson (the office) and Ellen Page (inception) It was shown at the Toronto Film festival, reactions were mostly positive which convinced IFC films to pick it up for a release.

The plot: Super is about a man named Frank Darbo (Rainn Wilson)His wife (Liv Tyler) has just left him for a drug dealer (Kevin Bacon) and the only way he thinks he can win her back is by fighting crime as the Crimson Bolt. He is joined by a young comic book fan (Ellen Page) who becomes his new sidekick Boltie.

Then you'd probably also like Griff The Invisible which is along the same lines. He's a loner boy with no friends by day, and a wannabe superhero by night.
I guess Kick-Ass started a trend for these movies? lol
I'm not seeing that one at the Fest though. It already premiered to good/mixed reviews
