Exclamation Advertising notification

We will probably soon start with advertising at the top of the site, which will optionally replace the "Most Popular Blu-ray Deals"/"Latest Price Drops".

The are two reasons for this:
1) It looks like traditional advertising will generate more revenue than we have previously estimated, revenue = healthy for the site.
2) With this extra revenue we will be able to further expand the site with hardware/HT reviewers and possibly other reviewers/features.

Please notice that members will be able to disable the advertising in the site preferences, in the same way that members are able to disable the "Most Popular Blu-ray Deals"/"Latest Price Drops", meaning that this will have zero effect on members.

Why not just leave the ads there but they can be removed for a small annual fee?

I think this is excellent news for Bu-ray.com and welcome it with open arms. Now if only we could open up a Blu-ray.com store, but perhaps this is forthcoming (?).

I agree, its all about the clicky clicky and if they are gone, then no clicks.

As long as we dont see exploding ads like what is on HDD, I am good. Those are awful

I got no problem with it, unless the make sounds when you mouse over (flash), or pop-up windows... could the 'deals' part be moved to the bottom or maybe the side?

As long as there are no annoying ads that actually make a sound and say "Congratulations! You have just won a free iPod! Click here to claim your prize!" or something like that, I'm cool with it.

I seriosuly doubt that wil happen. I suspect it's going to be very unobtrusive and it wouldn't surprise me to see major studios being a part of this, along with some of the heavy hitters on the manufacturing side.

I think it's fantastic. The more revenue that gets generated, the more our Admins are able to improve the site.

I think it's a good idea. I wouldn't make it optional. I would monitor content though. Some of those that have sound and auto-expand can be more trouble than they're worth IMO.

We will only display "Google Adsense"-type of advertising, so no popups, no blink-blink, no sound, no exploding ads, no spyware etc. Should a studio be interested in theming the site (special colors, background image etc) a week or two before a really big release, we might do that as well, but it will still not be any annoying/popup/sound/etc advertising.

That's good news. Unlike other sites, blu-ray.com is constantly upgraded and additional revenue is necessary for the site to keep growing.

You could always mimic Ebert's idea with his online club. One lifetime membership fee(it was cheap like $4.99) that got you life time membership to his club. With that you got a special newsletter and access to things before all the other people who follow his site do.

Considering the size of the user base and the small minimal fee you could theoretically raise enough capital in a small window to do the upgrades wanted. Then, you can end the window to sign up for a cheap amount.

Dont you think that the great thing about this site is all the great things you get by being a member which involves signing up for free? I think that by making people pay, no matter how small the amount, you would lose a fair few members.

Well, it would be optional. I joined the Ebert Club. It was cheap and it had great benefits. People that didn't join didn't lose anything they just didn't get access certain posts as fast as the members that paid did.

I paid to join another forum too and have no problems there. If the content is worth the price of admission then the cost is justified.

Sorry Mike, but I'm not liking that idea either. I'm also pretty sure that the owners/admins want to keep this site 100% FREE for ALL users.

I completely get where you're coming from but in my opinion, this forum is a wealth of knowledge that is a free membership away. I dont think it would be good to make people pay to communicate and access certain member features here. IMO, it would drive revenue away from this site and force people to head somewhere else and we dont want that do we?

What hes saying is more or less have a private forum for paying members, say if you pay to play you get xx forum. Not sure how beneficial that would be as it would limited to the paying peoples opinions

I never said to make the forum private. I said that an optional fee to get rid of ads would work.

I used Ebert as an example of how a small minimal fee is a great idea.

We don't have any plans of charging anything for any sections of the site, this is only about displaying conventional/traditional ads

The advertising is not yet in place, but we've added an advertising option to the Site Preferences:
