You could always mimic Ebert's idea with his online club. One lifetime membership fee(it was cheap like $4.99) that got you life time membership to his club. With that you got a special newsletter and access to things before all the other people who follow his site do.

Considering the size of the user base and the small minimal fee you could theoretically raise enough capital in a small window to do the upgrades wanted. Then, you can end the window to sign up for a cheap amount.

Dont you think that the great thing about this site is all the great things you get by being a member which involves signing up for free? I think that by making people pay, no matter how small the amount, you would lose a fair few members.

Well, it would be optional. I joined the Ebert Club. It was cheap and it had great benefits. People that didn't join didn't lose anything they just didn't get access certain posts as fast as the members that paid did.

I paid to join another forum too and have no problems there. If the content is worth the price of admission then the cost is justified.

I completely get where you're coming from but in my opinion, this forum is a wealth of knowledge that is a free membership away. I dont think it would be good to make people pay to communicate and access certain member features here. IMO, it would drive revenue away from this site and force people to head somewhere else and we dont want that do we?

What hes saying is more or less have a private forum for paying members, say if you pay to play you get xx forum. Not sure how beneficial that would be as it would limited to the paying peoples opinions

I never said to make the forum private. I said that an optional fee to get rid of ads would work.

I used Ebert as an example of how a small minimal fee is a great idea.

We don't have any plans of charging anything for any sections of the site, this is only about displaying conventional/traditional ads

The advertising is not yet in place, but we've added an advertising option to the Site Preferences:

I like the idea of studios "sponsoring" the site leading up to a big release.

Sorry Mike, but I'm not liking that idea either. I'm also pretty sure that the owners/admins want to keep this site 100% FREE for ALL users.
