Default Sales in Canada same as US?

Anyone know if the sales of Blu vs HD-DVD in Canada are different ratios than in the US, or are they lumped together for all of North America?

Yeah, I should have clarified that better. I was talking about Sales stats ratios, like Nielsen...Not deals or BOGOs.

If it's the same as NPD numbers, then yes. NPD has two sets of numbers for video games. Nielson may track and combine both. Someone at AVS would probably know though.

Where did you learn HD DVD is winning in Canada? Where I live it's ridiculous how bad it's doing. Most places don't sell any players at all, and shelf space is considerably higher for Blu-Ray everywhere.
I talk to sales associates regularly to see what's going on and they always say Blu-Ray is outselling HD DVD by a lot.
Of course this is just one little area and has little bearing on the total.

It was something I sensed, but to be honest I really haven't had my finger on the pulse of the overall Canadian scene for about eight months.

And, it looks like I am wrong:

HD DVD meet in Toronto

Quote:
Canada year to date: 61% BD ($7.6 million), 39% HD ($4.8 million) (including all companies).
So, Blu-ray has a 1.5:1 lead in Canada for 2007. Still, that would be pretty much HD DVD's best performance anywhere in the world.

That's 100% not true anyways. This time, I am Reffering to the deals, ever since Your dollar sank. We've had great Deals

Future Shop carries blu-rays for cheaper than Best Buy, and they're the same company. I got my Die Hard Collection for 79.99 CAD, that's about 81.16 USD

But the Ratio is off, According to Future Shop, (Holder of The largest Market Share In Canada for DVDs, Video Games, and HDM) We sell almost 300% more Blu-ray than HD-DVDs (October Numbers), although this makes for a small amount of the total north american sales, It means that the US has more people Supporting HD-DVD than the numbers show. Now keep in mind, these number may be exagerated, that's what i got from our regional manager, also, this is BC, iot may be different from the rest of Canada

In most places, I agree. But for some reason, London Drugs (or at least the one here in Kelowna) seems to have an HD DVD fixation. It's the only place that I've seen (that caries either HD medium) that shows favouritism towards HD DVD. I had to correct on of their employee's perspective a couple of weeks ago--he actually thought HD DVD was winning... :-/

That's interesting, because anything that happens in Canada that's HD-DVD seems to do so in Ontario, and I hear people talking how Ontario doesn't do Blu nearly as much as other provinces, so I wonder what the sales ratio is for Ontario alone...?

Even more interesting to me is the fact that a year or so ago, when I first heard the term Blu-ray and 1080p, it was from my buddy out in Edmonton, Alberta, who just got a new PS3. Those things must have sold like hotcakes in Alta... Must be the Rocky Mountains, shielding them from all the FUD!

Or maybe it's the hugely growing economy there with all that oil (largest oil sands in the world), they can easily afford quality equipment & newer/better/superior technology!

It was many months after that, before I first heard the term HD-DVD, and to this day it's still an oxymoron to me.

The London Drugs At Tillicum in Victoria has a Better Display for Blu-Rays than Future Shop Does, It's right there at checkout, and it's the only thing you see while waiting for your turn at Cash

I Guess it's upto each individual store, one of our walmarts Carries almost No HD-DVDs, while the other one, only a 20 minute drive away in bad traffic, has about 30% HD-DVD vs. 70% Blu-Ray. One of Our HMV's Has about 15% HD-DVD, and the Other has about 50%. It Differs. But i Have to Agree, Blu is a more domineering format in Canada

How could you pay only $79.99 ??? It's $106.01 ($92.99 + 14 % taxes). Same price is online (web site based in Vancouver):

Yeah, you can't get Die Hard Collecion for $79.99 at futureshop. It is, however getting to a point where we can start buying movies from stores though. Walmart has most fox titles (usually not the new releases) at $23 CAD, and futureshop and bestbuy has most new movies at $31-32 CAD. For two movies, I will only be paying about $4-6 more at the store than from ordering at Amazon.com. It is more or less about if you want the movie right away or if you can wait for it.

And about the sales in Canada....they aren't that high because I would have to say that about 70% of blu supporters get their movies from Amazon.com. I have 90 blu's and I only bought 5 of those from Canada. The rest were bought from Amazon.com. I also have 5 coming from J&R, but I am never ordering anything from them again.

Do you think so? Pretty much everywhere I shop for Blu-Ray, there seems to be roughly the same amount of shelf space devoted to Blu as there is for DUD. Most of my shopping is done in the Downtown Core, Beltline, and Mission District as I live just off 17th Ave SW. I do occasionally hit the Future Shop and Best Buy in Sunridge, as my parents still live in Whitehorn, and I'll stop in on my way to visit them. It feels like the format war is roughly 50/50 in these areas of Calgary.

I'm also curious about something else. Are Blockbuster Canada's policies different from their US counterparts? To my knowledge, prior to the month of October, the only 2 locations that carried HDM were the Mount Royal and Westhills locations, and they carried (and still do) both formats. The West Mount Royal location started carrying HDM recently, and they carry both Blu and DUD. I figured Mount Royal and Westhills would continue to carry DUD as they carried both formats during Blockbuster's "trial" phase. However, I was surprised to see it in the West Mount Royal location, as I thought it was reported that Blockbuster would carry ONLY Blu-ray outside of the initial test phase locations.

I always wondered this. From what I can tell they are likely more even in Canada. BB Canada for example rents both at every location.

Player sales are weaker in Canada I believe, esp in smaller areas where, unless you buy online, all you can choose from is the PS3 or 360 add on.
