Arrow Sunshine (2007)

Okay I have just finished watching Danny Boyle’s Sunshine staring Cillian Murphy and Chris Evans. I had previously seen this at the cinema so I was looking forward to watching it in full HD 1080p. For those who do not know the story behind this movie it is essentially a save the world Sci-fi movie about a bunch of astronauts and scientists on a mission to deliver a bomb to reignite the sun which is dying and causing an Ice Age back on Earth. If you like science fiction then I am confident that you will enjoy this movie. I would give it 3.5 Stars out of 5.

Video: This is a stunning presentation. Colours are vibrant and blacks are deep and clear. The only sequences which I found annoying were some of the “glare in lens” which I am assuming is deliberate by the director. Other than that I cannot really fault the movies picture quality. Certainly up there with Apocalypto IMO. I would give it 4.5 out of 5

Audio: It contains a DTS HD 5.1 which sizzles. It’s really a tremendous sound track . The deep sound of space and the sizzling effect of the sun across the ship is fantastic. On one or two occasions I found vocals to be diminished mainly when the actors were trying to speak across the alarms going off on the ship. But I think this is a calibration issue with my centre speaker. I will have to sort that out over the coming weekend. I would give it a 3.5 out of 5.

Supplements/Extras: Not really into extras but it does contain deleted scenes and commentary from Danny Boyle which I have not experienced and not likely to in the near future. Lol.

Overall I would give this movie a 3.75 out of 5. I am reluctant to give it a 4 as there have been better sci-fi’s but rarely has space looked this good.

I don't get it. Wasn't this a 1.1 Blu-Ray? Why no mention of it?

Sunshine was released earlier in the UK which then also received the BD version early. That meant no Profile 1.1 version over there.

The US version is the FIRST Profile 1.1 BD anywhere.

Ohhhhh I see. I was just curious how a 1.1 Blu-Ray would play on non-1.1 player.

It doesn't say on the box. The only place where it ordinarily says is at the very end of the movie, after the end credits. Fox's recent releases have been done by either Panasonic Hollywood Lab or Deluxe. Although Deluxe did an outstanding job on Mr. Brooks, the PQ on their encode of DH4 was to me a bit disappointing. Panasonic seems to be more consistent, doing outstanding work on Silver Surfer, Prison Break, and DH3. I thought the PQ on DH3 was surprisingly better than DH4.

Bullseye,

Thank you for the review. Its a must buy for me when released in the U.S.

Did you post your mini-review as comments in the Movies section of this forum?

Rup.

Thanks very much.

I would have been happier, however, if the answer had been Panasonic.

I need to upgrade my amp. I am thinking of the Onkyo TX-SR605. I am sure once I upgrade it i will also upgrade the audio.

So they have the Panasonic page followed by the Deluxe logo? I don't know that I recall seeing a split like that before. Very interesting. Thanks again.

Sounds like a really cool movie, weird that I didn't hear anything about it until coming onto the blu-ray forums.... anyways, I will probably get it when it comes out here.

Fox has a contract with Deluxe to do their authoring, but Panasonic are the only ones currently capable of doing PiP authoring. So they gave Deluxe what they could and final assembly by Panny

Thanks for that information.

So what does it mean when I see only the Panasonic name at the end, as on DH3 or Prison Break, or only the Deluxe name, as on Mr. Brooks or DH4?
