So I was checking out new movies for pre-order for blu next year. I decided I needed a quick laugh and looked at the pre-orders and announcements for HD-DVD next year. It was then, that I noticed something strange. Universal has movies coming out in January. After that, there is nothing from them. In fact nothing from WB either after January. The only studio showing any releases after January is of course paramount and some small neutral studio (can't remember the name). I think this is further leading me to suspect that at least 1 studio is going blu exclusive at CES. I really hope that its WB, because I have a $50 bet going that they do against my gf's brother (he's convinced HD-Dud is the way to go lmao.)

NOW THIS IS MY OPINION. DO NOT START FREAKING OUT AND START THREADS THAT THERE WAS A MEMBER WHO KNEW THE DATE WHEN STUDIOS WERE GOING EXCLUSIVE. I DON'T WANT TO SEE A WILD FIRE SPREAD LIKE IT DID WHEN THAT ONE IDIOT POSTED THE SUPPOSED DATE WARNER WAS GOING EXCLUSIVE.

Sorry to burst your bubble but I believe Twister (From Warner) is coming out for both formats in May, and I am pretty sure there are quite a few others already announced. But it's still possible they could go exclusive at CES. Although I think Universal would have to go neutral before they went Blu only.

Your not bursting my bubble . See I don't believe it until I see it . I'm just thinking that things are looking suspicious when it comes to the movies available for our pre-orders after January compared to theirs.

Last year, I was Pro-HD DVD and I remember hearing the same theories regarding Disney and Lionsgate going neutral at CES 2007.

Warner's already announced "No Reservations" for both formats for February, and some information is starting to leak about two animated titles they're releasing to both formats later in February. We'll probably see a catalog or two announced from them pretty soon, but Warner usually waits a while before announcing stuff... especially catalog titles... with the exception of "Twister" which got delayed...

I don't really have anything to say about Universal other than to say that we'll probably be hearing their February plans as well pretty soon.

Also, please note that earlier this year, Universal only released four titles in January, and two in February...

Warner Bros. released four in January, two in February...

That being said, I hope your conclusions are the case, but I wouldn't get my hopes up yet...

I'm almost to the pont of expect Warner to go Blu, however they keep saying that they want to remain neutral, I don't know for sure it's ultimately a guessing game, when it comes to Warner everyone is asking Blu or HD-DVD and no one saying neutral, just a thought.

as for Universal, I think they will be slower to adopt Blu-ray, so IF something happen to Warner Uni might join us.

there is a third studio that may go Blu Weinstein! they have stopped annoucing and releasing HD-DVD's are they just waiting to go blu in the new year? I hope so again these are just possiblities nothing solid.

Okay guys. 1st off I have not made conclusions. Just suspicions. I know that it is far fetched, but it was interesting to me to see nothing there on the craptastic format that is hd-dvd. I just don't want to be quoted as saying I believe this with all of my heart. Because, as I said "I'll believe it when I see it". But thanks Alan on those numbers for Jan. and Feb. this year.

Don't get me started on Weinstein. I want Grindhouse so bad. Not that shit version that was split for DVD. I want the true version that I saw in theaters, with the guest trailers from Eli Roth, Rob Zombie, etc. I want clerks 2. I would love for them to throw us a bone. Thats just another one that I will believe when i see it. The reason being, is because every time something new from them is coming people are like "well my sources say that Weinstein are going to blu-ray when this comes out DVD." I have yet to see some of those sexy releases

don't forget 1408 I loved that movie and I agree with grindhouse how it was seen in the theater is how it should be release to home media, but it's upto Weinstein if and how they release it for us...

Agree on 1408

As for Weinstein deciding that. That was messed up from the beginning. QT and RR should have been able to prevent them from splitting their movies up. Its sad that directors of their caliber had little control over their project's media distribution.

February discs don't start being solicited until December

Simple as that. 6-8 weeks lead

I've been thinking it's strange lately how all the focus is on Warner going exclusive, but in my mind, Universal going neutral would be almost equally as momentous of a development.

Back when we still had Paramount, Universal was literally the only major studio that didn't release on Blu-ray. If they were to join us now, we would once again have 5 out of the 6 major studios, and therefore a much stronger majority.

From my outsider's point of view, it really seems like it would be more likely for Universal to go neutral than for Warner to drop either format. However, obviously I don't know all the behind-the-scenes reasons these companies have for doing what they do.

I guess I just wish Blu-ray could strike back with some kind of studio deal of their own, whether it's with Criterion, Universal, Weinstein, or whomever.

maybe Universal doesn't believe in supporting both as everyone pretty much just wants one format anyways...

I still need to see more before I believe anything..

Well the reason for the big focus behind Warner is because of all studios, Warner has the biggest library of movies, many many thousands. So if they picked a side it would be a terrible shock for the other side.

As for the big studios, we already have 5 (Disney, Lionsgate, MGM, Sony, Fox). and they got two (Universal and the bribed Paramount).
Warner, the biggest is neutral for now.

if Warner goes exclusive TotalHD is dead before it's had a start, and BD gets a nice boost over HD-DVD, If Universal goes Neutral it could give Warner reason to restart TotalHD again as a potential format, and hold Warner off from going BD exclusive... I hope Warner goes first then Universal either neutral or BD exclusive

I guess that makes sense, theoretically. The thing is that if Universal does go BD exclusive, why would Warner want to start HD-DVD again? They've seen that Paramount has not been doing as well as they could have been by staying neutral or choosing BD over HD. It have to include some sort of bribery or dumb mistake by their execs if they follow the steps of Paramount. That's just my way of seeing it; however, Warner is big, and if they did want to start total HD again (if Universal were to go BD); I guess they might be able too.

Anyways, it's been looking good for Blu, and lets hope it will continue that way.

I was was hoping to say was if Universal went Neutral before Warner went BD exclusive, then Warner might try getting Universal and Warner releasing TotalHD, in an attempt to make neutrality/co-existence a real possibility.

Yeah, just like the titles that were announced from Paramount that were suddenly pulled before they jumped ship. Granted I'm not reading a thing into that first post, but that was a harsh lesson in not counting on those titles hitting a format.
