Default Interesting Article

I found an article touting Windows Vista and how it can't lose... its by Robert Cringely...

And if Microsoft wins, that means HD-DVD wins, too, leaving Blu-ray as the Betamax of HD optical drives. And like Beta, Blu-ray will probably find its (much smaller) niche in professional markets that can take advantage of its eventual greater capacity.

Completely out of touch with reality.

What the heck does this clown think people will be using HD discs for on Vista? There won't ever be stuff on BD/HD DVD-ROM except movies. And the HD DVD burners are MIA. And the one planned is only 1x and not RW compatible!

In the meantime, there are a half-dozen 2x-4x BD burners already on the market, and the Japanese are buying BD recorders like mad forcing the media prices down very quickly.

More good news for Microsoft is that they have won, for now, the game console war. To be fair, though, it isn't just that Microsoft won but that Sony lost. Blu-ray laser diode shortages are constraining PS3 production just at a time when Microsoft has a shot at breaking even on the production cost of its xBox 360s, which are gaining economies of scale. But the most important win here is the hearts of game developers, and those will go to whatever platform has the greatest number of units in the field, which, for high-end game consoles, means Microsoft.

Don't get me wrong, Sony's PS3 is technically superior to Microsoft's xBox 360, but NOT SUPERIOR ENOUGH. Wooing game developers from 12-15 million xBox 360s to instead write games for a couple million PS3s would require those PS3's to be an order of magnitude better as a game platform. Just somewhat better isn't enough, so for this round, at least, Microsoft wins.
Yep, how will Sony convince the developers to bring back Motostorm, Gran Turismo, etc. under the fold. Oh wait, they never lost them.

How companies are wooed: Big market, fewer competitors.

Clueless.

Footnote: I'm wondering how much MS paid for this piece. Piece of @#$%, that is.

This news is 2 months old, and I don't think particularly valid.

I'm with you guys... I think he was either smokin' crack or paid by m$ ... my only concern is I read somewhere else that Cringely is about 85% accurate in his predictions. I'm thinking this is the 15% ???

Would you prefer a 320GB HDD with your next computer or a 200GB drive? That is effectively the choice you are given with the optical removable, 50GB vs 30GB. I think this has Microsoft really rattled as there is the threat of many computers out there in the domestic without M$ - the market where they make their money. For most people a computer that can have web access, basic word processing, spread sheet and mail will satisfy most people, did someone just say Sony and Google!!!!. This could also be a media centre, so welcome new players Pioneer, Yamaha and Denon etc.
If the HD-DVD fanboy club is any indication the Vista fan club will be worse, with a close alliance between the two.

My thoughts Vista is NO threat to Blu-ray (even if it didn't support it - which it will) but Blu-ray is a big threat to Vista.

Well, something must fall in that 15%. And I think you need to measure the BOLD predictions, not all of them.

My prediction: Vista will sell LOTS of copies.

Will I be wrong?
