Default Horizontal PS3 is cooler vs. vertical

Not cooler looking, but the temperature of a horizontal PS3 is cooler than that of a vertical standing PS3.

Mine has been stood vertically since I bought it. It seems more logical this way as vertical means it has holes in the casing at the top and heat just rises out of it. Sort of.

And it looks better

i would agree that it looks better vertical and it saves space too. i mix mine up quite a bit depending if I'm at college (don't have room on my stand to put it horizontal) or at home (have room to put it horizontal) one thing i have noticed is that the fan kicks in more often when it is vertical. anyways, its probably not a big deal, its not like we are talking about the 360

I have mine standing up. Maybe I will change it and see if it runs cooler. I dont know about cooler but I must say you gotta love how quiet the PS3 runs. Sometimes I can barely even tell that its on. its Amazing. When I had my 360 the fan ran loud. You would think that it would be cooler but it still managed to overheat.

I followed the link to Polygamia and they have more pix of the PS3 there. From the pix and not from the text, it doesn't look like there's a huge difference between vertical and horizontal.

The hotspots are the vents at the back, the top (right side) and the bottom (left side). The left side has heat understandably because the power supply is housed there. This heat also shows up on top of the PS3 but again only on the left side/bottom.

The link to the actual Polygamia site. It's in Polish.

Optical drives aren't very happy vertically. Seriously now that we know, put your system horizontal the way it should be. It makes sense given that there's more surface area exposed with easier venting from the back vents than the top vent, because there's things getting in the way of that one.

From what I've seen of the interior, doesn't the fan exhaust out the back anyway?

I think I like the horizontal look better. I keep it horizontal in my room, cause of the furniture design, but if I ever move it to the family room I let it sit vertical.

I always wondered why some people complain about their PS3's a bit hot or noisy. Mine has been horizontal since purchase, mostly because I didn't have space for it vertically

Let's look at this another way. (I didn't read the playstation US board thread, so correct me if they already covered this). Rather than having a knee-jerk reaction to "OMG, vertical has the highest temp, horizontal is better!", maybe the reason vertical has the highest temp is because more heat is coming out of the top vents.

gravity acts on all things. Even air and heat. But they shouldn't "break" or over heat if vertical. If Sony thought they would fail vertically it would have said not to do that on teh front page of the manual

Mine runs cooler vertically, I have a "loud" PS3 and it only get to the second speed when vertically and to third speed horizontally (much louder). Perhaps they should do the test with more than one PS3.

Cause the 60Gb has 2 different model of fan. I don't know for the 80GB and the 40GB definetely runs cooler thant the 2 others..

the one in my bedroom runs cooler vertically. although thats because there's more room to ventilate when its that way. the one in the living room in laying down. it fits in with everything else that way.

It looks like the imaging and temps are of the vents. Doesn't that mean the vertical orientation is actually better?
