Yeah the Skynet Edition is known to have DNR, but who would have thought it would be that bad eh? I'm not really complaining mind you, I wouldn't turn my nose up at it, or throw it away.. just an interesting comparison.
The DNR is definitely there. To me though it doesn't look terribly offensive. It is smoothing some of the very, very fine detail out in that shot but unlike many other DNR messes skin pores and hair strands are still visible and look natural. Arnold's skin also doesn't really take on any more of a waxed look than it already had to begin with.
I think it's a bit of a trade off between a a little DNR and all the versions/extra content the Skynet Edition has.
Ok I have taken shots at the requested time codes. They may not be the exact frame you are looking for, as its easier to take shots when shots end or start, so they might be a few frames out, but each comparison shot is a direct copy of the frame.
Will upload when host returns. What ever happened to reliable hosts? lol
Thanks Kai, I do see some banding in the screenshots most noticably on 1:44 & 2:09 and on 6:11 check out the caution sticker on the back of the truck which looks decidedly more mushy on the skynet version.
Meh, I'm usually a stickler for DNR, but overall I find this to be one of the less obtrusive titles. Yes, it's definitely there but I don't think it's killed the film-like look of the movie and I don't see instances where much detail has been removed (the caution sign has some blurring, but at the same time fine detail like the hairs on Linda Hamilton's chin are still there and well resolved ).
I actually find that the constant lines up the top of the frame are more distracting. They are often found on older transfers and they just always seem to stick out. On the Skynet Edition they aren't present.
KaiGusto, what version of the film is on the original BD? I seem to recall it being the theatrical cut. If it is that's the main thing for me as I find the extended edition to be far superior.
I've seen the Skynet Edition projected on a 100" screen from four metres and although pausing it and looking closely will enable you to see the DNR, in reality when it's in motion it really is quite hard to detect. In fact, in this case if anything it probably had a bit of a look of softness but it definitely didn't look like everyone was a waxwork figure. Having looked at films like Dark City and the Star Trek film series on the same screen I can definitely say it didn't stand out, as a matter of fact it wasn't overly perceptible at all.

Its the Directors Cut. The 'smiling' scene was only present on that version.

The original release also had digital noise present (not just grain) from memory and had no lossless audio.

Yeah, and the us release has even more dnr . One thing worth noting is the difference in cropping in your photos, is that source related? or have you don it on accident. In either case as I traded my tin case I think I may pick up the original release know that I know it has lossless audio.
I don't see any cropping, I do see that the 08 release is slightly squashed. Images were captured in MPC Home Cinema, where it captures the entire frame.
Aspect Ratio for 08 comes in at: 2.3617283950617283950617283950617 when removing all black framing.
Aspect Ratio for 09: 2.3538083538083538083538083538084

Those are my measurements lol
Croppin is the wrong word, the skynet version looks vertically streched. Maybe it's my pc doing it.
No, the original UK/French disc and Japanese disc were always known to have the best picture quality. That is if you followed all the multi page threads every time a new disc came out.
