Default PS3 Hard drive and music transfering ?'s

I just wanted to confirm that this would work... 2.5" sata 250gb 5400rpm hard drive to put in my PS3. I'm 99% sure that I'm right, but want to confirm.

Also, I want to know what the music transfering is like on the PS3. I have 160gb worth of MP3's properly tagged and organized on my external hard drive... can I just plug the external into the PS3 via usb and transfer the MP3's over in one copy and paste motion, and will it preserve the tags and organization of my music?

i am wondering that you have re-formatted the HDD since you bought it. If you have, then your file system is likely to be NTFS (that is if you use windows). It must be FAT32, and FAT32 has a limit: 32GB maximum
You need to make a partition and it must be less than 32 GB

I'm not sure what you mean. I don't actually have the hard drive yet, I'm gonna order it to put it in my PS3, and I am wondering if I can transfer 160gb worth of music onto it at once, or is there a limit per transfer? I only have a 60gb in it right now, and I'm experimenting with transfering stuff right now through a usb 1 gb stick, but that isnt big enough to test my theory.

FAT32? partition? all the online guides I've read say you just replace the drive and let the PS3 format it, then copy back all your content. Easy. There are guys on this forum that have 200Gb drives in the PS3's, I will be joining them in the new year!

You need to make a partition and it must be less than 32 GB

Here to help.
That internal drive should work. Put it in the PS3 and it will detect it and format it. Your external drive needs to be formated FAT32 or the PS3 will not recognize it. There is not a 32gb limit to FAT32. The limit of FAT32 is 8tb. The problem is Windows can not make a partition larger than 32gb so you will have to use a third party program to do it. I have 400gb external Seagate drive connected to my PS3 and it can see all my music. All 110gb of it. I used Seagate tools to format my external drive. Hope this helps.

Or if he has access to a Mac it will do it.

Default Everyone should be aware..

that there is a current limitation of 205GB (not 250GB) on the partition size for the internal drive. If your installing Linux , the 10GB Linux partition will come out of that 205GB eaving you with 195Gb..hopefully a firmware update in the future will change it.

My internal drive definitely formatted as only 205GB..there is also a review somewhere else that indicated the same thing was happening to them..

Maybe it's an issue with some drives and not others?

What is your model .. I have the Western Digital 250GB..

Is it possible that haste formatted the drive while using a more recent version of System Software?

I actually a bit shocked why I can't create partition larger than 32GB (while I could do it before migrating to vista). That stupid vista can't run my partition magic.

Well it is very weird for sure..the system info is now saying 232GB - and I have set aside 10GB for Linux as well. It used to say 195 or 205GB..I did two re-formats because I forgot to install Linux the first time..which is why I'm unsure which one system info was reporting.

I think one of the firmware updates since I upgraded may have fixed some kind of reporting error or now in fact has one..

The *really* weird thing is I went thru and calculated the disk space used/free from before and after the upgrades etc..and the 195/205GB size was actually correct given what it was reporting for free space. The new number of 232 GB's total space means we have used up over 95GB - a 50% increase since the upgrade..which is highly doubtful given all our music and photos etc have been stable since then..it took us 10 months to fill the 60GB and that included adding the 30GB or so of music as a first time shot..

Something ain't right .. just not sure where.
