Default Toshiba on auto-destruct mode

Was dropping by the Imdb this morning, and I noticed that Toshiba's "Affordable is one way to look at it" online ad had changed.
Instead of promising 7 free movies, it now promises 10!

I loled

Toshiba is getting desperate. Soon they will offer the entire HD DVD library with any HD DVD player purchase.
I admit with a deal like that, I might give in

on all the other forums there's people criticizing BLU for all the BOGO, and 5 free movies, claiming that they're just giving away their movies. i think HD-DUD is pretty much doing the same thing. are they just plain stupid or are they blinding themselves from the truth?

Yeah, the key question is which is it? Stupid or blind?

Realistically, this war is good for consumers--of the winning format.

Cheaper machines and cheaper disks are great, as long as you aren't the ones (HD, for example) that are stuck with the losing format. But, I guess, they can eventually claim, "Heck, at least I didn't pay anything for all this worthless junk!"

Tosh is selling their cheaper units at a loss. This is an issue of pride for them and I agree that it is self destructive and unsustainable.

They should make a BD player and gain some sales back after the HD DVD losses

So giving away half of your sales and 5 BDs is good but, giving away 7 or 10 free is bad?

Makes sense to me!

No. Firesaling your players, and then having to give away 10 movies to get someone to buy said players is bad.

Selling all of your players at $99, several hundred below the suggested retail, and at a significant loss, and STILL get your asses handed to you is bad.

When I can pick up a sub 100$ HD DVDplayer and 15 free movies, I'll do so. Until then it's not worth it.

not a matter of good or bad. It is a matter of why would someone be stupid enough to have faith in a product and assume it has some value if the maker does not? It is not the 10 free, it i9s the 100$ price with the 10 movies. It is not a matter of bad, but a matter of using your brain and noticing that they did not sell that many players and most of those sold where to people that already wasted money on HD DVD and decided “hey I get 10 movies for 100$ -much less then retail- and I get a nice door stop” the problem is these people, the guy that bought it as an upgrading player…. Wont be buying (more) HD DVD disks.

In the end the studio does not care if 750k players or 2.5M or 100k or any other number. They care how many copies they sold. And a bogo is a sale at a price the studio was happy with. While 100$ players and free movies makes headlines it does not change the sales statistics.

I should modify my post to say:

Selling an HD-DVD "Boiler" Disc - $35
Selling a Toshiba HD-A2 Player - $99
Selling a Toshiba HD-A2 w/7 movies - $99
Selling all of your HD-DVD players at $99, several hundred below the suggested retail, and at a significant loss, and STILL get your asses handed to you - PRICELESS
