Default To Auto Set Up....OR NOT...

Guys, just a discussion.I have the Yamaha V663 receiver when I originally got it I did the YAPO auto set up right after that was done I did some research and did some adjustment on my own and I must say with the adjustment that was made it was sounding excellent....now 2 week ago I redid the YAPO set up and the sound just isn't there anymore like it was before.

Now, just curious as to who stick with there auto set up and who do there own thing.

Initial YPAO, then I do my own thing with my trusty Radio Shack analog SPL meter. YPAO has been very close in my room, but I have heard of bad experiences.

I am not at home right now but what would you say the ideal crossover should be.I forgot what YAPO set it to.

Ditto. I use YPAO to let the system set room distances and overall equalization. I then use my Radio Shack digital SPL meter and my Digital Essentials Blu-ray calibration disc to fine tune the system. Keep in mind that the Radio Shack SPL meters don't pick up all information on lower frequencies. If you're trying to set speaker levels for your sub it's suggested that you raise the dB level a couple of notches to compensate.

It depends on your speakers... If you have one crossover setting for the whole system, set it above the highest value of the low limits of all your speakers ±3 dB frequency response.

For example (in my case):

Fronts ±3dB frequency response: 37 Hz – 22 kHz
Center ±3dB frequency response: 85 Hz – 22 kHz
Surrounds ±3dB frequency response: 95 Hz – 22 kHz

If my receiver had only one crossover point, I would have had to set it above 95 Hz (something like 100 Hz should be fine). For my speakers, the manufacturer also specified a +3 dB/-9dB frequency reponse which is wider and this range could also be used since the higher variation is in the negative instead of the positive.

By the way to answer your initial question (and like others have proposed), run the auto-config at first. You can even run it a couple of times, take notes of the results. Then run your own tests, adjust the crossover, the distances and the levels (go buy a SPL meter, now! :P). You could compare the results with the result of the YPAO but be carefull not to use a crossover points lower than the capacity of the speaker so that you don't damage them.

It depends on your speakers. 5 of my 7 go below 40hz so my crossover is set at 60. Many will say 80 (that's the thx norm) what speakers are you driving?

Ditto on the all of the above - especially the bass issue!
