Default Format War

Can Sony actually mark up a notch in the win column. After Betamax, Laser Disc, Mini Disc and UMD could Blu-Ray actually win them a format war?

You forgot to mention dvd which was co-developed by Sony.
Sony doesn't even head the BDA. A vp of Panasonic, which is owned by the largest manufacturer of electronics, holds the GM position.
VHS was Sony vs. everybody else, now it's Toshiba vs. everybody else. If anything, the history of the vcrs favors the team Sony is on.
Perhaps next we could compare the war between motor coaches and horses.

CD was initially created by Philips, as was the DVD, Sony just put in money after the initial creations.

Yes, and Philips is one of the co-inventors of Blu-ray.

What is weird is that (and feel free to correct me if I have been misinformed about this) Betamax was not only better selling, but also better technology, but VHS won out because the Porn industry went with VHS as it was cheaper to manufacture.

This is where my concerns lie, as Blu-Ray seems better technology, is obviously out selling HD by a hell of a lot, but I had heard that the Porn industry is going HD exclusive. That is a lot of sales from the biggest movie industry in the world. Any thoughts??

1. Porn will not affect this war, different era, people can download their porn, most don't want to see this stuff in hi-def.
2. Betamax vs. VHS, sorry man, this a completely different age and era, their is no comparison between these two wars.

No not a troll, just asking questions. Why is it that whenever someone has a thought or opinion on a forum that differs from the norm, they are a troll? I have to say that previously I wouldn't have bought either Blu-Ray or HD players yet, however my girlfriend bought me a PS3, watched my first Blu-Ray tonight and am certainly glad of the format. Just cncerned I may have to end up paying out for an HD player in the future.

It has been discussed to death, elsewhere. Simply put it is an old mentality.

OK I can see how that would make a difference, not sure why I didn't think about it before, thanks for stating the obvious on that one, lol.

Gotta ask thou what makes this format war different to the previous one, apart from the porn POV it looks like the same situation.

Batamax was only better because it had better video. VHS had much longer record time (more space), more studio support & more hardware manufacturers.

Well they are cheap as hell, wouldn't cost much, heck, Toshiba may GIVE you one, along with a couple dozen movies, if you would just TAKE IT! lol.

We have been getting a lot of trolls lately with the format war, people are understandably testy, tread lightly if you are for real, if not, begone.

Do you realize what a ridiculous statement this is?
As though all of the different porn companies got together and agreed to not make blu-rays.
You're showing your a$$ more than any porn ever has.

Well, this time the situation is reversed... Blu-ray is in a situation that VHS was back then, while Toshiba is more like your Beta-max. After all, they are the ONLY manufacturer developing these players PERIOD.

Neither side is going to give up easily, obviously. However it is important to look at who the backers are, who has more to loose, who has lost the most already, how dedicated are the backers. Right now Blu-ray has more and better support, from studios, tech companies and manufacturers. Even with MS being the 800lb gorilla in HD DVDs camp their reason for being there is not to defend HD DVD but to help destroy it and Blu-ray.

No trolling is not my intention, and I do get that people just like starting a fight for the sake of it, however I am not one of those buffoons. People seem to get so defensive though, lol. I apologise if anyone has been offended though.

There is nothing wrong with something being cheap though, the Nintendo DS is cheap and that is the best selling console on the planet. You can buy DVD players for £25 and they were £400+ when they came out, cheap is not so bad.

There is nothing inherently wrong with inexpensive stuff... but in this case, HD-DVD, it's very purpose is really to perpetuate this war, and kill both formats. Thus the need to deal the format a killing blow, which will come over time.
