I really like the movie Rio Bravo, and I noticed there wern't any reviews for it yet. Has anyone seen this transfer? If so...how is it?

I own it and I'd definitely purchase it if you don't already have it on Standard Def. It's been a while since I watched it, but from what I remember the transfer was pretty good for a 40+ year old movie. I don't notice defects as well as some, however, so I may not be the best judge.

If I were you, I'd buy it.

Want to get a bunch of John Wayne westerns on BD, especially the John Ford films.

As I recall, it does fill the screen.

EDIT: Personally, I want the Quiet Man on Blu. That'll be forever and a day, I know, but I can dream.

Received a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/rio_bravo/
The Searchers received a 98% at R.T. and is also on the BOGO list:
http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/searchers/
I recommend getting both with no hesitations.

Gonna disagree here as I don't want people having expectations too high. RB is not bad by any means (there are a few dodgy scenes, mostly outdoor) but it can't sniff The Searchers. I believe TS was VistaVision and RB is not?

My PQ rank of the westerns I've seen...

1 The Searchers
2 The Cowboys
3 Rio Bravo

"The Searchers" was filmed in VistaVision. "Rio Bravo" was not, as far as I can tell.

Rio Bravo is a great movie. I'm embarrassed to admit that the first time I saw it was when I recently acquired the blu-ray version.

I thought the PQ was okay, but I don't think it is in the same league as The Searchers.

This might not be the fairest comparison, as I've not seen Searchers or Cowboys on BR (or any medium, yet), but I do own Rio Bravo and Unforgiven and I would put Unforgiven at the top of that list (again, prob. unfair being 30+ yrs. newer, but still it's awesome PQ).

I've owned the movie for two months and haven't watched it yet. I'm glad the concensous is that it's a good transfer.

I just have to put COD4 down long enough to get the movie in. So little time...

I like "Rio Bravo" but my personal favoriter of those types of movies is "Rio Lobo" which is probably down to nostalgia reasons.

I remember watching "Rio Lobo" with my grandfather on TV and being upset that the BBC cut it for live coverage of the SAS swinging into action to rescue the hostages at the Iranian Embassy in London. I was 9 years old at the time and much more interested in the John Wayne movie than watching some real-life live heroics on TV.

It was about 15 years later, 10 years after my grandfather had passed away, before I finally saw the ending of the movie.

Rio Bravo plays about twice a month on AMC saturday mornings, but Direct TV does not have AMC in HD, getting the Blu-Ray delivery tomorrow and anticipate a great picture. Looking for El Dorado on Blu-Ray, same exact movie with James Caan in the Ricky Nelson role and Robert Mitchum in the Dean Martin role.
